iPhone Mania Slowly Hitting New York

With less than four days until the Apple iPhone finally hits shelves across the country, anticipation is reaching a boiling point. This $600 device (for 8gb, $500 for 4gb) is following the tradition set down by generations (and repeated recently with the PS3), fan boys are starting to amass in the time honored tradition of excessive line waiting.

The honor of first in line goes to two gentlemen whom Gizmodo interviewed at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store yesterday. The first two at the Soho store arrived this morning. They're clad with shirts advertising for Keep a Child Alive and plan to auction off the iPhone for Charity.

Noteworthy:

  • Apple has a 20 minute guided tour detailing iPhone functionality. If you are on the fence about the phone, don't watch this - you will be pushed over.
  • Apple on setup and plan costs
  • Steve Jobs was profiled in New York Magazine last week. They talk about Job's well documented working behavior, and whether Apple's luck will run out with the iPhone.
  • David Pogue reviews the iPhone for the New York Times. There is even a video to watch. It's interesting to see a reviewers hands finally.
  • CNet Top 5: iPhone waiting-line essentials
  • NY Post "reviews" the iPhone (the article doesn't sound like he even touched it)

  • Walt Mossberg chimes in

Regardless, if you are first on line or are turning away from the screen right now, it would be hard for one to argue the significance of this device. We leave you with this, which to us summarizes the power of this phone on the average user. When the guided tour video was shown to a patient techno-loathing wife, we were shocked by her excitement and the quote: "This seems more like evil magic than technology." In the end, it's people like her that are going to give iPhone a future. And its ability to be used by people who aren't tech-savvy will rate its success. What's made Apple successful so far is largely its simplicity, it's what they do best.

I still don't Understand. Everyone and their mother will have an Iphone 6 months from now. I think the novelty has worn off already. Why be on a line for a week just to have it ten minutes earlier than everyone else? The worst thing about the iphone is that it makes you look like a douche for having a huge slab next to your face. seriously, put it next to your face.

what's an iphone?

user-pic

I have a question. If Apple can integrate screen-touching technology to move stuff around, operate controls, etc. into an iPhone, then why is Microsoft's Surface similar technology the size of a big ass table?

$500 bucks? It aint worth it.

Making it avaliable to the other GSM carriers would
be a good idea. I doubt it will be as big a hit as everyone thinks it will be. Its kinda pricey.

Wait, I'm confused too.

Where was the "never" option in the poll?

Screw the iPhone, I say.

user-pic

wooohoooo! yea baby. gimme gimme gimme. wait what is the iphone?

user-pic

8 GB? Isn't that sort of teeny compared to iPods that can hold 80 GB? Or am I missing something here?

user-pic

Yeah, where's the never/don't care option?

user-pic

#7, Apple wants you to buy both, so they intentionally keep the storage space on the iphone low.

"8 GB? Isn't that sort of teeny compared to iPods that can hold 80 GB? Or am I missing something here?"

80 gig ipods use hard drives, while 8 gigs use flash drives (I think). Flash memory is more expensive than hard rive memory, but since they have no moving parts, the battery life is much much better. Ipod nanos and shuffles use the flash drives (hence their longer battery life), while regular ipods still use hard disk drives.

So in order to have a phone/camera/ipod/etc. all in one tiny machine and still have a battery life that is useful, the only option is going with flash memory, and if they wanted to make an 80 gig phone with flash memory, it'd be way too expensive.

user-pic

The tech/memory will improve eventually (1gb flash drives have gone from $200 to $40 in 2 years) but the touch screen as opposed to buttons is asking for disaster on a phone

Why has no one mentioned whether or not this highly expensive piece of technology will be covered by phone insurance?

I will never own an iPhone. I am a loyal WM5 & WM6 phone user. I currently own a tweaked Treo 750 and Have a HTC Trinity on order. I love 3rd party applications and I love UMTS & HSDPA, both the iPhone is missing.

No PDA is covered by Insurance, I have owned over 10 in the past 2 years. In the iPhone demo video, they show that they are working on an 80GB iPhone already.

It is glass, wait until it is in your back pocket and you sit on it while on the subway. I saw a few nanos' and iPod videos' break that way.

where's the 'never' option neil? oh right. you're a graphic designer. you wear a beret and drink french coffee and whore yourself out for the betterment of apple. wait isn't your name raven?

Sorry about the never option. We've added it now. Total oversight.

I am an Apple fanboy - but I'm probably holding off on this (unless I need one to test for Gothamist use *hint hint*). Primarily cause I'm T-Mobile and I'm hesitant on 1st Gen (though my 1st Gen iPod is still kicking it well)

Reset the poll for scientific results. ;)

500$ for the phone then 60$ a month yikes

AT&T SUCKS! until other providers are in on the game and the 5th generation is the solvent for all issues, i'll just wait... i also think the price is ridic.

user-pic

I read today that this first generation phone is not upgradeable in any way. If they speed up the network you'll have to buy a new phone to take advantage. Sounds like the Internet is very slow if you aren't on Wifi.

user-pic

Think of the iPhone as an 8GB video iPod, plus a cell phone, plus a good internet tablet (but locked to a relatively expensive provider with slow data that can't be upgraded).

If you need those three things, and you don't care about being able to type emails, IMs or SMS efficiently, go for an iPhone -- $500 is a very fair price for all those functions in one slim/light device.

But if you care about text entry and low plan costs for data, it's BlackBerry all the way. And on T-Mobile, if you want the cheapest unlimited-data plans (especially if you ever travel internationally -- AT&T's intl data plan is obscenely expensive and needs a 12-month commitment, T-Mo's is cheap and you can hop on & off by the day).

BlackBerries sync perfectly w/ Mac data now (Mail, Address Book, iCal, etc.), via PocketMac which is free.

user-pic

Oops, $500 is for the 4GB model. Still a very fair price for what you get.

user-pic

Pointless unless they make it totally accessible to all the carriers ! Posted By; "Still Not Amused"
