Reverse Allowance as Mom Steals Daughter's Inheritance
A mother will spend the next 15 weekends in jail and the following five years on probation as part of her sentencing for looting her 8-year-old daughter's inheritance. Stavon Simpson's daughter was left $186,000 by her father, a longtime city employee who died from lung cancer in 2005. While withdrawals were only supposed to be made on the daughter's behalf with a court order, her mother unilaterally withdrew $143,000 in order to buy furniture, pay household bills, and to purchase her boyfriend a $55,000 car.
The investigation of Simpson began after she complained to the city Employees Retirement System and to Surrogate's Court about a missing death benefit check.Simpson narrowly avoided a 15-year sentence, instead of a 15-weekend sentence, by accepted a third degree grand larceny charge instead of the threatened second degree grand larceny charge. The bank that allowed her to withdraw the funds without the proper dual endorsement is repaying the balance to the eight-year-old girl.
