Pencil This In

THEATER: HERE Artistic Director Kristin Marting concludes the OBIE-winning art center’s season by directing performer/dancer Alexandra Beller in us, “a highly athletic, sensual and dynamic blend of movement with song, text and a layered soundscape. Beller created this deeply personal commentary on the state of the union from the perspective of a woman who is at a crisis point in a love relationship.” As we haven’t seen it, we’ll defer to The New Yorker on this one: “The former Bill T. Jones standout dresses herself in the American flag, uses it as a jump rope, breast-feeds it. A sound score assaults her with conservative rhetoric, circa 2004, and she enlists the audience in pointing out contradictions in Leviticus.” Just another reason why we love New York. ENDS SUNDAY! – John Del Signore

Friday // 8:30pm // HERE Arts Center [145 6th Ave] // Tickets cost $20.

COMEDY: Tonight join Slovin and Allen for their show ROFL. It's "the very best of the internet, lovingly hand-picked by eight of America’s most-respected blogger types for maximum freshness and optimum awesomeness...high art, low humor, YouTube video, Myspace weirdness, flash animation, web memes, conceptual puzzles, original film and non-sequiturs galore." They promise drinking, and possibly some girls.

Friday // 11:30pm // Joe's Pub [425 Lafayette St] // $12

MUSIC: New York, are you ready to rock? We're not talking indie rock, or pop rock or whatever else the kids are listening to these days. We're talking Headbangers Ball, get the Ronnie James Dio-originated devil horn finger formation down, and bang your head at the 2nd annual Brooklyn Metal Fest.

Saturday // Noon?! // The Hook [18 Commerce St, Red Hook ] // $15

2007_06_arts_mermaid.jpgPARADE: Saturday Coney Island will ignore the inevitable changes coming its way, and focus on the Mermaid Parade, touted as "the world's largest art parade". Still going strong in its 25th year, this year will include Mythbusters host Adam Savage and Rescue Me's Patti d'Arbanville as the King Neptune and Queen Mermaid of the celebration. Be sure to head over to the Mermaid Ball afterwards for a crazy party featuring Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff.

Parade > Saturday // 2pm // Coney Island [W 10th St ] // Free
Ball > Saturday // 6pm // Child's Restauant Building [the Boardwalk at West 21st Street] // $10

COMEDY: Here's the thing...Nick Maritato and Sean O'Connor are embarking on a tour of summer camps with Jordan Carlos and Brooke Van Poppelen. Contacted by This American Life, they're documenting the contrast between their adult humor and kid humor. Guests include: Mike Dobbins, Party Central USA, Brooke Van Poppelen, Seth Herzog and Jordan Carlos w/ Special Guest Host Andrew Wright.

Saturday // 5:30pm // Rififi [332 E 11th St]

THEATER: The unabashedly brainy and imaginative Target Margin Theater concludes their season “On the Greeks” with two unlikely stage adaptations. The evening begins with Aristotle’s Poetics, renamed The Argument and performed solo by OBIE-winner David Greenspan as a sort of physical philosophy lecture that’s as whimsical as it is edifying. Act II finds the entire company transforming Plato’s The Symposium into Dinner Party, in which a tight-knit group of New York arts professionals drink and banter humorously on the subject of love. Director David Herskovits’s sumptuous and inspired staging brings these dusty classics to life in consistently surprising ways; read our full review here. – John Del Signore

Saturday // 7:30pm // The Kitchen [512 W. 19th St.] // Tickets cost $15.

2007_06_arts_pegasus.jpgMUSEUM: If you haven't checked out the Mythic Creatures exhibit at AMNH yet, why not do it Sunday when they'll be holding a Mythic Festival. A perfect way to continue your fantastical weekend if you go to the Mermaid Parade the day before. "Visitors are invited to a festival celebrating the Museum’s special exhibition Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns, and Mermaids. Tying together cultural, historical, and scientific perspectives, this festival will feature dance performances, theater, workshops, films, conversations with some of the most popular authors of our time, and a“mythic fair. Between performances, there will be a dragon and unicorn parade through the Museum with the martial arts group Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute."

Sunday // 1 to 5pm // American Museum of Natural History [CPW at 79th St] // Free with museum admission

And don't forget to check out the Gay Pride Parade this Sunday!
