Camera in the Kitchen: Big Booty Bread Co

bigbooty-window.jpg

If the rows of freshly baked bread in Big Booty Bread Co's window don't catch your eye, the drawing of a young male baker happily sticking his bum out as he holds out a steaming loaf of bread probably will. We were enticed by both.

bigbooty-assorted.jpg

The bakery mainly specializes in sweets, such as booty buns (mildly sweet soft buns filled with nutella, dulce de leche, or strawberry and cream cheese), cookies, scones, cupcakes, turnovers and cakes. For something non-sweet they have bread in roll and loaf form and cheese-flavored bread buns. They also offer hot and cold sandwiches in case you want something more substantial (not that we wouldn't want to eat a meal of cookies and cupcakes; we just don't think our body would enjoy the sugar rush).

bigbooty-grilledcheese.jpg

Alright, maybe a grilled cheese sandwich isn't very substantial in the nutrition department, but it's warm, gooey and filling, aka "makes our belly happy." This would be better with a different kind of cheese or maybe an additional one that wasn't fluorescent, but the soft, thick, just slightly chewy white bread tasted like the mattresses of angels. Because for some reason we imagine that everything in heaven is edible and delicious, and if we were an angel we'd want to sleep on a thick slice of white bread that was both baby-soft and study enough to provide back support. Or, in the case of eating, mouth support.

bigbooty-mozz.jpg

We felt similarly about the tomato and mozzarella sandwich; the filling was alright—we would've welcomed the inclusion of basil—but the bread was the star.

bigbooty-chocchip.jpg

bigbooty-triplechoc.jpg

Our favorite sweets are the chocolate chip cookies. One is triple chocolate chip while the other is regular chocolate chip. The regular chocolate chip cookie is about the size of a small, very flat moon evenly speckled with little chocolate chips. The triple chocolate chip doesn't have as large of a diameter but it has larger chunks of chocolate that, we assume from the name, comes in three flavors. We could only discern two—regular and hazelnut—but we'd happily eat another one (or three) of the moist, fresh-from-the-oven soft cookies to find out if there is a third flavor.

Big Booty Bread Co is located at 261 W 23rd St (between 7th and 8th Aves). (212) 414-3056

This place is kinda cute, but I've always wondered: Do ya really want people to be thinking about the size of their boo-tays when you're, um, trying to sell them the stuff that MAKES boo-tays big?

user-pic

Ummm Gay BRead? This must be in the Village right? What kind of straight male would ever walk into this store unless it was to point fingers and laugh at the homos.

user-pic

As a homo who used to live in the neighborhood (thank god that stint is over), the gayness of this place was repulsive when I first noticed it. What in the hell would possess someone, even the most rabid of sex-obsessed fags, to open a place named Big Booty Bread Company and use a big cartoon Chelsea queen as the mascot? Good God.

I dont frequent places with incredibly stupid names, I dont care how good their product is.

user-pic

What the hell is wrong with you people? Yeah, the name is pretty silly but it's clearly all in good fun. No one complains when a place like this has an obviously "straight" name/image, so why bitch about this?

user-pic

that picture entices you? it reminds me of copraphilia. loaf + bum = ewwww

user-pic

I go there a lot on my lunch break-- their sandwiches are AWESOME and their desserts are second to none! Best of all, it's never crowded -- guess the name & logo scare away all the dipshits who are stupid enough to focus on the sign outside rather than the great food.

I'd actually like to try something from there.... but not with that on the window. What the hell were they thinking?

user-pic

Come to think of it, that guy looks like a young Rex Reed, stuffed full of sticky buns and fresh from a sound ass-pounding in the Pines. Ewwww, indeed.

user-pic

Those cookies look like every standard-issue cookie at every standard-issue deli in the city.

re: #5 ...what places in the city have an obviously "straight" name? just curious.

user-pic

Cute name, horrible food. Their baked goods are hardly a step above Hostess cupcakes and other store bought cellophane wrapped junk.

user-pic

guess the name & logo scare away all the dipshits who are stupid enough to focus on the sign outside rather than the great food.

I've been around long enough to be cynical. Usually when a place tries to be cute and clever with their name and/or logo they are compensating for their average product. New York is the capital of marketing and advertising. Maybe you're just falling for it like all the sheep that wait 45 minutes for a Magnolia Bakery cupcake.

user-pic

Is the photographer who shot these photos color blind? Last time I checked, most cookies are brown, not orange/yellow.

user-pic

magnolia - may the person who made that crap burn in hell!!!!!! I waited my two bits and when I got that 3 dollar cupcake I went into sugar shock and am now diabetic. IT's ALL SUGAR!!!!!

#14: Lighting affects photos and I don't carry a white light source everywhere with me. The camera lens and the human eye don't always see the same thing. I only feel like photoshopping something for so long.

In other words, no, not colorblind.

user-pic

job well done roboppy. good to see you gave this assignment your all.

Too bad you haven't been around long enough to have any common sense.

Uhhh... yeah. So therefore if you're trying to make it as a business in New York, the LAST thing you'd want to do is be cute and clever, especially if you have a good product.

Maybe you're just falling for it like all the sheep that wait 45 minutes for a Magnolia Bakery cupcake.

I'm pretty sure I stressed the merits of their food, but whatever. Stay away from there, please. The last thing I'd want is to have your narrow-minded homophobic fat ass hogging up two seats when I just want to sit and enjoy my slice of dulce de leche cake.

Im gay and I find that storefront retarded, tacky and weird. I know it seems silly to judge a book by its cover, but when there are dozens and dozens of bakeries in the city, why do I need to go into one who dont appear to be taking their business very seriously? They're just trying too hard.

user-pic

Lol, Change the name to "Back-shot" Bread company . Why not ? "Big Booty" seems tacky enough . Posted By; "Still Not Amused"

user-pic

It's better than Hot & Crusty.

user-pic

"...about the size of a small, very flat moon"

I still do not know what size the cookies are.

user-pic

That's probably the most amusing storefront I've every seen--the symmetry is priceless. (And why assume the poor guy's sexuality? Maybe he just has a big bum.)

I think that grilled cheese looks damn sexy, and that the size of the cookies should be decipherable by any casual chocolate-cookie consumer. And also that nitpickers should identify themselves or prove that they have any ground upon which to be critical. Jeez.

user-pic

Why are we doing a photo essay of a bakery that's been around for a while and serves up stuff that's only "blah" at best? It's great for Gothamist to cover mom and pops that aren't necessarily trendy or new, but at least find the real hidden gems.

Anyway, who goes to a Latin-themed bakery for a mozzarella sandwich?

user-pic

That bread looks delicious! I am a big bread fan. It has to be done right. I really enjoy a place called the dorothy lane market. They have the best bakery!

Also on another note I ate at this cool place in the village called peanut butter and co.

Check them out! Happy eating!

ah, they ARE pretty asshole-y.

user-pic

something about the internet makes assholes come out in droves. robyn is awesome, and you all retarded. didn't your mothers ever tell you that if you can't say something nice (or at least, critical in a nice sort of way), then not to say anything at ALL?

user-pic

Ok, if the same place was in a neighborhood other than Chelsea, would people be saying the same thing?? What's so offensive or tacky about it? It's cute, it's a f*^#ing bakery, for god's sake. But then again, I'm a straight female, so maybe my opinion doesn't matter on such issues. The cartoon guy is supposed to be a representation of the owner, not some generic "fag." Jeez people. I've only had their cheese rock, but that was pretty darn good.

user-pic

Most of you are idiots. The place is a Latino bakery and in Latin culture, a lot of people have "big booties." Jeesh! Quit being so ignorant. Not everything has to be "gay" just because it's in Chelsea!

I ENJOY RED VELVET CUPCAKE VERY MUCH AND WISH TO PURCHASE MANY. IN MY COUNTRY OF NIGERIA WE HAVE NO SUCH DELICACY AS THESE. THEY PLEASE ME VERY MUCH.
