1. seems like "hipster" is some kind of generic shorthand for "people we hate." kinda like "p.c." in conservative radio, it loses its meaning. so who is a hipster? i am guessing that i am because i am a (*)gay (*)white (*)male with a (*)college degree, some (*)economic security, i (*)live in an urban environment, i like contemporary (*)art and (*)culture. what about the fact that i sometimes (*)listen to npr? or, worse yet, i sometimes have friends over for (*)brunch. i (*)read the (*)nytimes (online). i (*)post on gothamist.

2. i swoon for swoon. that girl is just plain goodness.

3. "graffiti" writers dislike of "street" art is partly macho posturing. graphic characters are girly, perhaps? seems like the "graffiti" writers have some envy, insecurity, and a turf battle invested in their anger.

4. the "splasher" is evil for mixing glass into the paste to hurt people who would pull down the manifesto. the "splasher" needs an editor; that shit is confusing and boring. the "splasher" is a hypocrite - focusing on street art and ignoring the more pervasive and destructive corporate advertising (and corporations); focusing on the street artists but ignoring other people who are treated like fucking "rock stars."

5. wooster is not merely a guide to ny street art. those kids are international in focus and readership (it's a world wide web). they have favorites; biases; they are not a "collective"; they like some corporate advertising; blah blah blah. and, they're fucking great. they connected an international street art community. it is beautiful to watch this global community evolve, artists responding to other artists, new talent emerging, new methods employed.

6. street artists are doing it for themselves. a small number have figured out how to support themselves with screen prints, t-shirts, zines, art shows, graphic design and other shit. some engage in community projects, protests, seek alternatives to the current american-capitalist hegemony. a small number has found some art world success with gallery shows and "fine art" prices for their work. to the horror of some of the "establishment" in the "pretentious" contemporary art world, some street artists are even finding their way into museum shows and, likely, art history books.

7. all the hate here is misplaced. spend that energy helping people, other creatures, the planet, something. there are a huge number of sick fucks doing a lot of bad shit. graffiti and street art are not the problem. hate is not the solution.

8. i found enough of the comments here interesting enough to keep reading, and to respond.

I'm glad there are folks out there who see right through "Shep" and his "art." Mr. Fairey profits from people's misery. Assholes like him have co-opted dissent. Throughout history, revolutionaries have used public space to voice discontent. They did not and do not do it for money or fancy parties in "Dumbo." They don't make limited edition prints to be hung in New York City lofts. Shepard is a douche-bag. He's full of shit. If he REALLY supports free expression, he should pay for the poor kid's legal fees.

I know that kid in the pink shirt, hes Jimmy Cooper, hes not a street artist, hes an aspiring writer, and a bit of a nut job. Hes not a bad guy, just kind of impulsive. I would doubt if hes actually the splasher, I could seem him getting himself mixed up in something dumb like this. 15 years is pretty harsh, especially considering no one got hurt. The whole thing is blown out of proportion.

Boo fucking hoo is all I have to say to this.

So you put up a stencil/tag/painting on a wall. Guess what geniuses? The shit is temporary, like everything else in life. If it rained and it washed away your stupid bullshit would you still be crying, shaking your fist at the sky saying "I can't wait till I find you, weather system!"

I'm glad this kid is splashing assholes like Fairley and Banksy, these pretentious cocksuckers. Make money and shit man, that's fine but don't sit here and try and act like these items are so "street" and this splasher kid doesn't know what its about. Apparently he knows how to push your buttons.

As for Wooster, most definitely fuck those 2. That website does nothing but play favorites, and seeing as I don't know either of the 2 people who run it and can only see what they post, I sure as hell don't need them as my "guides" to the NY street art scene.

Keep going splasher - splash away. Make these idiots when you do street art, it may not last a day...

Lets just face the facts; the splasher is a no talent, fairey is a photoshop wizard, levine is similar to a profiteer circus ringmaster, and you are the pawn paying attention.

Thousands of street artists with heart are overlooked in favor of repetition and familiarity. I see it as all as i do TV, each artist being a different channel. I can't get caught up on one of them, or would even consider paying them.

The loser=hipster movement will eventually just consume, then purge, moving onto something else. The profiteers will have moved on. This will all be in the art history books. Look to the future people. The splasher isn't that. He's just a participant in the eventual culmination of the street art movement. The movement will eventually die. Not entirely, just as all subcultures exist in rare, nerdly pockets.

Whats sad is that there is hundreds of overlooked artists in favor of a handful, and thousands more that choose to consume rather than participate in the movement. People have went to lengths just to pay to be part of it, instead of actually living it. It's already in the process... anyone can be a street artists. The bubble will pop, and all that will remain are those nerds who are so addicted they cant stop.

this is already too long but heres my two cents.
this is stupid.
he got caught its his problem. hes not a terrorist. hes an artist. the terrorists are the government. the people in control.
splashiing paint is art.
torturing people can be an art also. look at guantanamo.
shepard fairy makes nice work. but that just my opinion. and no one gets to say that his work s better or worse than anything else. just because the moma says it, its not true. just because he sold this for this much does not make it not true. to believe these values is to believe the lie that shepard fairy and most other politically oriented street artists are trying to discredit (i beleive): capitalism, heirarchy, authority.

SHEPHERD FAIREY is the stink bomb
And the Splasher is what Fairey was. Pretty soon, you'll be able to pick up a splasher sticker pack(maybe for inside your apt too) instead of OBEY. My vote is with Guest #59, Lindsay #67 and everyone else who thinks that Fairey's work looks great but sucks sucks sucks. So who's going to make the sticker pack? Get me 2! Utah, 2.

The Splasher is obviously a skinny white male turd who went to an art school who has limited or no skills. Frustrated and jealous because no one recognizes his greatness besiders his mom. Hey Splasher, lets see some art! Where can we see your work, a gallery, website, postcard. Come on, you must have have something interesting to share with the public beyond your decision to inhibit other people's freedom of expression. If you feel street art is a diluted co-opting of a former real urban expression, then lead the way to a new form. Does NYC need your decision to limit expression because: you dont like the art/you dont think it is art/it is illegal. Who appointed you as the arbiter of what should be in the public eye.

What's the opposite of hipster - loser? I love the way people who weren't even born yet when Shepard started bombing are now trying to tell him what 'street' is.

Street is nothing more than where you live when you haven't had any success. When nobody is feeling you, turn green, give them a lable like hipster, and pretend there is something hardcore about your disregarded ephemera. It should make feel better at least for a little while. That is, until the next admired creation reminds you of your mediocrity.

splasher or no, charging into an exhibition with the intent of sabotage does nothing good for the community.

love shephard or not, feel like he's a sell-out or not, the hate and disregard for the reprocussions of setting off any sort of explosive devise is simply not acceptable.

15 years maybe a bit excessive yeah, but come on guys.

art is meant to be discussed, debated, questioned and questioned again. not destroyed or defaced. destroy the things you disagree with and who have you become? burn some books while you're at it.

grow up and have your debate out in the open if you really have something to say, rather than hiding behind a splash of paint.

I was at the gallery opening night. He was surrounded with a barracade fence while signing autographs like a f***ing rock star.

"Artists" like this make me sick. Especially when its a bunch of stolen images that he basically just photocopied onto a big wall and slapped his own logo on it. Not that the guy donesn't have any talent but seriously stick to t-shirts and graphic design and keep the nice gallery spaces open for people that actually have a unique vision, not some vauge quasi political message on big dollar bills (while of course he's ravashing in his own dirty weath).

His whole vision is a contradiction. FUNNY that his art displays an image of a police officer saying "i'm gunna kick your ass and get away with it" YET he has cops save his own ass from his own gallery opening. ZZING.

Sorry Shepard, looks like you just ate your own!

Good point 12:32. Also, perhaps people should not take toddlers to a place where there are intoxicated people in the first place if they want their kids to be safe. This all just seems a ridiculous overreaction to some stupid kids idea of a prank. Didn't anyone ever have a stink bomb set off in their high school before? It used to happen at least twice a year in my high school and no stampedes or mayhem ensued. It just smelled really bad. Guess the cops had more to do back then.

There is no doubt this could have caused harm. However, many people who were at the event have said there was only one exit. Did the Jonathan Levine Gallery have a permit to house 600 people with only one door? Seems rather odd to me.

I think people here are confusing two very different issues. Whether or not this guy is 'The Splasher' is immaterial, what HE did caused have caused a LOT of people to get hurt. I was there the whole evening, and if that thing went off, there would have been hudnred of intoxicated people all trying to jam out of one exit. Ths isn't about 'Street' art and hipster credibility. It's about yelling fire in a crowded theatre. Sure 15 years is a bit harsh, because the worst case scenario was prevented, but suppose he lit whatever he had, and people were trampled and ended up with broken bones, or g-d forbid people wer trampled to death. There were quite a few toddlers and kids in strollers there. Should their lives be put in jeopardy over some hipster prank? If someone in my family were hurt or killed over this I would say 15 years is a slap on the wrist. People should examine the larger picture, which is public safety not art.

I love when the charge is made that the Splasher is 'attention-hungry' -- of course he is. And so are the artists that he splashes.

P.S. Shepard Fairey is a hypocrit.

Personally, I like the artwork better splashed. it adds depth, personality to the rather mundane pieces of artwork that are thrown up daily.

Thank god for the splasher, without him graffiti wouldn't be on such a high right now, he is bringing so much press to these artists and causing controversy which the whole medium is supposed to be about. No one has gotten the main stream/non art scene to talk about graffiti like this movement since Bansky, but that has been quite awhile.

ALEX MINDLIN said it best in the NYTimes article:
“We’re going to start co-opting it and just embracing it,” he is from a group called Faile who has also had work splashed.

Haha, but was that the splasher, or is this all speculation?

you are rich white kids who usurped an out of date and out of style form of art that came from the streets of new york and you want to throw kids who don't like what you're doing in jail - for 15 years.Did you ever think that if original graff artists got this kind of treatment you assholes wouldn't be around?

yes call me outraged. un-fucking-believable.

Whoever is doing this is a total douchebag. That piece in the picture is a wonderful piece of art, that is part of the community. I can't believe someone would be so lame and ruin so many nice pieces. Street art or not its still art, and many people like myself enjoy seeing these pieces. I was at the show last night and I support Fairey and his work.

That shit WAS lit and looked really scary when the wick was burning down before someone put it out with their foot. If more people saw that or if it actually went off there could have been some serious problems with such a big crowd and one door. Fuck that kid, he put himself in the uncomfortable position he is in.

re: Since when is challenging tradition and authority a bad thing?

I like how we're confusing "challinging tradition and authority" with "being an asshole."

Do these kids have nothing better to do with their time? I say send 'em around to some of the schools in Brooklyn or a shelter or something...give them something useful to do. They can make their statement there.

"Splasher is sloppy. Stuff gets splashed next to his targets (my awning) and I gotta get up on a ladder and clean it up or get a new one."

If you had cleaned off the graffiti quickly, this wouldn't have happened. Blame yourself. If you lie down with dogs, you'll wake up with fleas. Too bad that law never passed forcing property owners to pay the bill after the city cleans off a wall.

"Struggling" trust fund art-school students with BFA's, using a medium previously only used by graffiti artists, creating commercial "street art" for the hipsters, riding the wave of "underground" coolness and cashing in taking it all the way to the bank. "Failes show cleared 1.5 million, swoon's pieces are in the MOMA." $3,500 for a small box piece at the Faile show hardly sounds street. Slapping up prefab pieces to the wall takes away from the trade of real street art. They should stay commercial and stick to making cool tees for the hipster community. Who cares if the Splasher splashes paint on their sticky rice paper? Sounds like all this publicity is feeding their best interests.

Splasher is sloppy. Stuff gets splashed next to his targets (my awning) and I gotta get up on a ladder and clean it up or get a new one. Fireman don't like to be called in on a prank at a gallery, the department doesn't exist for that purpose. Stinkbombs don't cause a stampede, people just leave, but lighting some kind of homemade device is a little scary to me. Splasher, you may not like the art/artist, but c'mon, doing pranks like that at a crowded opening can put life and limb at risk. How far are you willing to take your actions to get your point across? What is your point anyway? You are pissing off a lot of people who are not your intended target. Ever heard of the innocent bystander? My personal take? Police are down to punish street artists no matter what ethnicity, income level, school degree, etc., and very harshly for that matter. Whose side are you on boy, whose side are you on?

If I knew who/where he was I would beat the sh!t out of him.

Fairey and Faile and Swoon are at the forefront of the art world. Faile's show cleared 1.5 million 2 weeks ago. Swoon's pieces are in the collection of the MoMA. I would much rather have free public art on my corner than an Ad for Virgin mobile. I was very sad when the splasher hit an amazing WK Interact piece on my block in the LES. I use to pass it everyday and see something different every time. Now it's just pink sh!t thanks to this brat.

Don't make an untrained artist the next big thing in Street Art.

I think the splasher(s) are a left over team from Giuliani's quality of life task force acting out of sheer dedication to the old beady-eyed chief.

As for art statements on top of art statements goes, it just goes to show you the state of the arts in gentrified New York City. They should go splash the Stock Exchange. (Like when Abie Hoffman and company entered the visitors gallery at the NYSE and threw dollar bills to the floor creating chaos and bringing trading to a halt that day --- not that's an art statement!) YIPPIE!

I don't see why there's so much debate about this. People seem to be taking sides here, as if the thoughts "this is great art" and "the person(s) should be punished if caught" are mutually exclusive. Of course both are true, and that's one of the aspects to street art that makes it what it is; the illicit nature of it, the danger, the urgency, all of that makes street so appealing to the artists themselves.

I agree that if the people involved put the gallery attendees in any sort of trouble then that was irresponsible and indefensible, but the general idea of vandalizing vandalism is brilliant. Then again, if they got caught, they better expect to be punished.

At least they get to suffer for their art

I was at the opening last night, and while I can't say whether or not those two people were collectively 'The Splasher', I can say what they were doing was extremely dangerous. The show was absolutely packed (I was told there were 3500 people on the guest list)., and it could have really turned into a stampede situation where people got hurt had they succeded.

Could the motive be to make a statement against 'established' street art (and not attention and jealousy)?

Either way, its friggin hilarious...

"hey you got your vandalism om my street art!"

"hey you got your street art on my vandalism!"

oh btw, you left off the last paragraph from the wc post: "Obviously at this point we don't know if the guy above is indeed the Splasher. But in the next couple of hours we expect that now that a photo has been shown of the guy caught tonight for trying to sabotage Shepard's show, that more of the story will come out."

That's all you've got? Speculation in the "art community" (i.e. morons) that the Splasher set off a stink bomb at a show?

Very responsible, Wooster and Jake.

what are the facts here? i'm not defending anyone at all (attempting to set off a stink bomb like that is just stupid), but i don't really see the facts that connect this to the splasher. throwing alleged before splasher in the title doesn't really cover this. it looks like just some stupid kids.

i'm a hyperpretentious d-bag. i feel the need to use phrases like cognitive dissonance. also, they aren't pressing charges he vandalized their vandalism, other guy. if charges are pressed it will be for disrupting the art show not being the splasher. he'll probably (hopefully) just get his ass kicked for the latter. and really must we be bombarded with comments about "vandalism" evvvery time a post is about street art. go read the nytimes.

No, the person in that photo is not the same Zach who was stalking Swoon. But like the kid in the photos, Zach also looks like a douche.

It seems obvious that by now "the splasher" is a franchise operation, no?

While I don't agree with graffiti (euphemistically called "street art" by Dobkin and crew) in any form, I find it HILARIOUS when the Splasher defaces hipster's art and they get angry about it. The cognitive dissonance must be intense!
