Pencil This In

It's the longest day of the year, so you should be able to fit Shepard Fairey's exhibit and at least one of the following events in.

READING: Tommy Trantino was convicted and sentenced to death in 1964 for the murder of two New Jersey police officers. While doing time, he wrote to Leonard Weinglass, the lawyer who defended the Chicago Seven. From the letters came a book deal, and his stories (along with poetry, drawings and more) can be found in Lock the Lock (a book that "was lauded by luminaries such as Henry Miller, Allen Ginsberg, Kurt Vonnegut and William Burroughs"). After spending 37 years in jail, he was a free man again in 2002 - and he's speaking tonight at what is sure to be an historic event. (Stay tuned for our interview with him next week!) More details on tonight's event, here.

7pm // McNally Robinson [52 Prince St]

2007_06_arts_skatebk.jpgSKATE: FreeNYC reminds us that today is all about skateboarding: "No School. No Work. Go Skate! Today is Go Skateboarding Day, so forget about everything else and Go Skateboard! While the day itself doesn't have organized activities, many cities, shops and friends are putting some plans into action." More info here.

All Day // Everywhere // Free

SURF: Lookie here, it's also International Surfing Day! So skate over to the beach and catch some waves. Surfrider Foundation will be holding an event at Rockaway Beach which will include a "beach clean-up, paddle-out, a gathering and goodies."

4pm // Rockaway Beach [90th St] // Free

THEATER: OFF Stage: The East Village Fragments is a walking performance celebrating the birth of downtown’s off-off-Broadway experimental aesthetic – the stuff of Sam Shepard, LaMaMa and Viet Rock, which concludes the evening. (The West Village version of this concept, the brainchild of Peculiar Works, recently took home an OBIE.) With 80 actors and 22 directors staging 29 scenes throughout the East Village, the production is a moveable feast of fringe and half-forgotten theater radicals. Reviewer Pete Boisvert was certainly satiated: “One of the most thrilling aspects of the evening is the anticipation of where the next scene will come from. I found myself studying passersby on the street, wondering if they would become part of the show next.” – John Del Signore

7pm, 7:30pm, 8pm, 8:30pm // Begins at The Alamo [AKA "The Cube" in Astor Place] // Tickets cost $18.

COMEDY: Last weekend we found ourselves at a wrestling match/comedy hybrid of a show at UCB. Tonight Charlie Todd and his improv troupe are back, with Cage Match! Go, get ready to have the letters W T F spinning through your mind, and enjoy the world's most dangerous comedy show. More info here.

11pm // UCB Theater [307 W 26th] // $5

MUSIC: There's free music happening all over the city today at Make Music New York, so check out the schedule...or just walk around outside and we're sure you'll hear something.
