Off-Duty Cop Raped in Her Brooklyn Home

2007_06_bayrdige.jpgAn off-duty police officer was raped in her Bay Ridge home last night. Police believe that the attacker entered her apartment through a window or door. The victim described him as being a white man wearing a mask; the attacker also threatened her with a knife.

The police flooded Bay Ridge Avenue and the surrounding streets with patrol cars, helicopters and canine units. Neighbors were worried, with one telling the Daily News, "This is a very scary thing. I have three daughters, so I'm very worried. We've lived here 20 years, and we've never had this kind of trouble. Nothing like this has ever happened."

The victim, who has been on the force for five years, was treated at Lutheran Medical and reporteldy did not have any injuries beyond the rape. The attack occurred in the 68th Precinct, which also includes Dyker Heights and Fort Hamilton. According to the latest CompStat numbers (PDF), there have been 5 rapes year-to-date and there were 9 rapes in 2006.

"came in through a window or door"

Glad to know it's not Santa Claus. Pedro Negro, perhaps? Look for a little burro.

While BR is relatively low crime, it isn't crime free. There have been a few muggings on our block over the years.

Since this victim is a cop, though, one wonders if she was specifically targeted for some reason. (Though maybe I should strike that. She would own a gun, after all.)

Heh, [6]. Yeah, I guess they've eliminated the possibility that the guy dug a tunnel into the house or came in through an invisible hole in the roof.

Came in "through a window or door", huh? Nice work, detectives!

" We've lived here 20 years, and we've never had this kind of trouble. Nothing like this has ever happened."

Whenever a serious crime occurs in a residential area, neighbors interviewed on the news invariably have one of two reactions. Either they express shock that something bad could happen in such a safe peaceful area, like the person quoted above, or they shrug and say that it's just another typical violent day in the 'hood.

#[2] I believe it happened in the area of Bay Ridge Ave. & Colonial Rd. (in the vicinity of Casa Pepe).

This is real kind of scary because the attack happened during daylight (7pm) in an apartment on a heavily-trafficked street in what is generally regarded as a very safe neighborhood. Because of my job, I work odd hours so I often leave very early in the morning and return home to Bay Ridge very late in the evening and I've NEVER had any reason to feel unsafe. (Also, it is kind of unsettling that this happened to a woman who is also a cop.)

I hope they catch the guy. But because he was wearing a mask, it seems like they don't have a very good description at this time. Creepy.
