Bronx Marriage Bureau Doesn't Like Marrying People

2007_06_bronxsupremecourt.jpgYou'd think that the marriage bureau at the Bronx Supreme Court would have learned its lesson, after the Post wrote about it closing early (without permission), dashing the dreams of a couple. But the bureau seems to be back to its old tricks, as the Post reveals two couples were turned away even though they arrived well before closing time.

One couple had a relative present who needed to fly back to London. The other's couple groom, who is in the Navy and had to ship out to South Korea last night, said, "It was like 3:10, and she [a clerk] said, 'It's too late.' She said she was done for the day, and just walked away from us." The Post wrote:

The clerks quickly changed their tune when the press arrived as surprise wedding guests. Recognizing reporters as those who exposed their unauthorized office retirement party a few weeks ago, the city workers quickly sprung into action, working past their 4 p.m. closing.

By 4:15, both couples were in wedded bliss.

We do love how reporters on the courthouse beat are stepping in. The city clerk's office says they are investigating the matter.

One reader made the wise observation that you should never arrive at any city agency even 2 hours before closing, because you never know. However, it's still ridiculous for the office to claim they are closed 45 minutes before their stated closing time. Maybe the NYC Marriage Bureau website needs to add "Please allow 1-2 hours additional time for processing."

let me guess.

the clerk is fat, a bureaucratic lifer, and perpetually cranky.

See, even the incentive of a cushy gubmint job with a steady paycheck isn't enough to get these folks do what's right (namely, work). And yeah, by "these folks" I am insinuating and assuming they're a minority.

Remember from the first time the Post caught them in the act: "Yes. If this lady is leaving, we won't see her no more in life."

There's no incentive to work PERIOD if you have a civil service job. This goes for Cops, politicos everyone on down the gubmint free cheese line.
It's not just this incident or this bureau/agency.

Let me guess...

Same "guest" posting three times. You know, part of being a good guest is knowing when to leave...

Turning off guest comments now.

Back in the early 1990's I worked at a fairly large courthouse in a different state. The big joke was that the only thing more barren than the surface of the Moon was the judges' parking lot on Friday afternoons.

actually no. i was the first guest. the other two were someone else.

Civil servants are lazy? Shocking.

I'm number three and I've spent 3 years working in a civil service job. The harder you work, the less it is appreciated. Now that summer is here, here's a stipulation, TOO hot? NO AC?, get off early until fixed.
Elevator takes too long to get up to the office?, 15 mins elevator time. You can cut work at 4:45 instead of 5:00.
Friday Payday? extra half hour lunch to cash your check.

Apologies, #1/6.

your NYC marriage bureau website link isn't correct--it goes to the New York Times.

what's worse than over the top hateful comments from guests? having to read, "Turning off guest comments now."...who cares?

and by the way I'd gladly register for a user name if the system didnt repeatedly come up with an error.

Tim N,
You're constant whining about guest comments are making you annoying. Turn off guest comments and keep it off-- or shut up already...

#11,
I totally agree with what you posted-- sorry, just saw your post now. I want to register but I keep getting an error message too.

This site is supposed to be a place where people give their opinion. That's why we read and that's why we keep coming back. If guest comments annoy you, then shut them off and stop complaining, hear me TIM N!

I was at the Manhattan marriage license bureau this morning and I just have to say it was a wonderful, pleasant experience. Everyone was nice, helpful and smiling-- even the security guards.

Tim N. = faggot

#14. Agreed. Went to the NYC license bureau, and aside from the long line at the metal detectors, it was a breeze. We brought food, ipods and were expecting to make a morning out of it. WE were in and out in a 1/2 hour and the staff, while visibily miserable at their lives, were surprisingly nice.

the worst part about Tim N proclaiming that he was turning off guest comments is that judging from post #9, he didn't even turn them off!

I think we're starting to lose sight of the real focus here - are all the workers there black, or only 99%?

Tim N., the natives are getting restless...

hey! congrats #14!

I'm a guest and I like tim n

Have to agree with Jen. Maybe the marriage bureaus should specify to "Please allow 1-2 hours additional time for processing" (although two hours seems excessive--one hour would seem about right).

Hey people, getting married at a NYC Marriage Bureau isn't like driving through a McDonald's takeout!
You have to allow some time for the paperwork (i.e., bureaucracy). Use some common sense.

man, city employees are soooo lazy. it's almost a wonder things get done.

or, how about last license will be issued at 4pm or something to that effect.
The couple arrived at the office at 3:10pm, it's not unreasonable to ask that they get their license if the office closes at 5pm.

#[24] - the link says that the office closes at 4pm not 5pm.
