- Racked brings us the sad news of the demise of Gertel's Bakery, a Lower East Side institution. It will close up shop on Friday, after more than 90 years of challah, rugelach, and other baked goodness.
- And in other closing news, even bringing in Wayne Nish couldn't help Varietal. Restaurant Girl has the details.
- Gridskipper rounds up (pun very much intended) some of the city's best bagel shops. Why does H&H count twice and Murray's, which also has two locations, once? Poor little 6th Avenue Murray's.
- Do you love the nightlife? Like to boogie? Well Zagat's 2007/2008 NYC Nightlife Survey covers 1,265 bars, lounges, clubs and pubs. The East Village and the Lower East Side received the most newcomers this year (is there really room for another bar in the East Village?), including Death & Co., Grape & Grain, and Marshall Stack, and Pastis still reigns as the top hot spot. Available at bookstores for $14.95.
- And finally, just because we couldn't help ourselves, check out this burger made entirely of bacon from A Hamburger Today. Holy heart attack on a plate -- or a bun in this case!
