Thanks to a donation from Target, the city will be distributing free cycling helmets throughout all five boroughs in coming weeks, as part of a program called "GET FIT-TED." That's not an admonition for some guy named Ted to get in shape; it has to do with a dual emphasis on properly fitting cyclists with their helmets and encouraging physical fitness among New Yorkers through cycling and other outdoor activities.
Dept. of Transportation commissioner Jannete Sadik-Khan and Dept. of Parks and Recreation commissioner Adrian Benepe were both sporting the new NYC helmets at a press conference yesterday. The unique design was made especially for NYC. The helmets feature an abstract grid of non-specific streets overlaid on an apple-red background. Today, DOT volunteers and employees will be fitting and giving away 1,000 helmets in Central Park. Anyone interested in a free helmet should call 311 to schedule a free fitting at one of the DOT's designated locations.

thats pretty crazy, first condoms - now helmets? I kinda want one, but I'd fear being a dork target.
That's interesting . Not try to get people to wear them ! Personally, I wear an old fashioned skateboarders helmet . Them Bicycle helmet's are cheap and light weight . They give under pressure .
That's what they're SUPPOSED to do - give under pressure. They're supposed to crumple and thus absorb energy from the impact. If you had, say, a rock-hard helmet, it will not be damaged at all when it hits the ground... so the impact will all be transferred to your head... which means it's like no helmet at all.
