Last Night's Action: Nine Is Divine

  • Yankees 7 Arizona 1: It’s funny how baseball works. When the Yankees and Mets met in the first round of the Subway Series, the Mets were on a roll and the Yankees in disarray. When they resume the series tonight, the Yankees will be the favorites.

The Yankees won their ninth in a row Thursday afternoon, beating the Diamondbacks with a great start by Andy Pettitte and another big day at the bat from Alex Rodriguez and Hideki Matsui. Both went 3-for-4 with A-Rod driving in two and Matsui three. Pettitte went eight innings while only allowing five baserunners and lowering his ERA to 2.93.

Everyone may say that the Yankees are “only” 7 ½ games back of the Red Sox, but that is still a huge amount. It would be better to focus on winning the second round of the Subway Series. Roger Clemens and Oliver Perez will get things started at 7:05..

how is 7 1/2 back a lot when the Yanks play the Sox, oh, about 20 more times?

Yanks will be in first by the middle of July.

For the record, Letterman has been a big Yankee fan for a while now. That's why Damon was doing his Fenway Felon number... trying to get under his skin.

Guess I should have explained that the first go-round. :>)

I liked the first two Bourne movies, and I am sure the 3rd will be a hit as well. I also doubt Lettermen is a Yankee fan, while Leno and Conan are definitely Bosox fans.

Bosox will most likely win the division, Yanks will make it close but come up short.

    GO SOX!

On Monday night, June 4, professional pretty boy and plagiarist* Matt Damon went on Letterman wearing a Red Sawx jersey and talking smack about the Townies. Letterman reminded him that the Yanks had just beaten his Sux on a ninth-inning home run by Alex Rodriguez off Jon Papelbon. Matt (Don't Call Me Johnny) Damon responded with "Well, ten more of those and you'll be in second place." He then went on to say that nothing Letterman could say would bother him because "when the Yanks just suck sooo bad, everything in life is good." Letterman just nodded his head as if to say, Well, we'll see.

To give the Damon his due, on that night the Yanks were 24-30, in fourth place, 13.5 games back.

Since that night, the Yanks have gone 9-0 to raise their record to 33-31 and have gained five games on the Sux, after gaining a game on them the previous weekend. Meanwhile, the Beaneaters have gone 4-6.

Letterman also showed a clip from The Bourne Ultimatum. If Damon does for the move what he did for the Red Sox, we could have another Heaven's Gate on our hands.

But, I have to say, from the bottom of my heart, thanks Matt.
