McCartney's Intimate New York Show

2007_05_arts_paulmc.jpgIt isn't very often a Beatle takes a small stage for an intimate show in New York. Last night, this very thing happened...and lucky for those in attendance, that Beatle wasn't Ringo.

Paul McCartney played to a crowd of about 700 fans, press folk and a few celebs (Elijah Wood and Whoopi Goldberg) at the Highline Ballroom. While Macca was there promoting his new album, Memory Almost Full, his set list was full of oldies and goodies. From Billboard:

Drive My Car, Only Mama Knows, Dance Tonight, C Moon, The Long and Winding Road, I'll Follow the Sun, Calico Skies, That Was Me, Blackbird, Here Today, Back in the U.S.S.R., Nod Your Head, House of Wax, I've Got a Feeling, Matchbox, Get Back, Hey Jude, Let It Be, Lady Madonna. I Saw Her Standing There.

Before performing "Here Today," originally written for John Lennon, he said "I'd like to dedicate it tonight to fallen heroes John, George (and) Linda." If you missed out, he'll be back on a full scale tour next year. In the meantime, check out this video for his new song "Dance Tonight," featuring Natalie Portman.

While we were told cameras weren't allowed, there are plenty of shots around the internet. The above via SethKallen's Flickr.

He was good in Caveman. Oh wait, sorry, I forgot, that was shite.

At least he didn't play that lame-ass "Freedom" song he put out after 9/11. That song makes me sick.

first of all lennon was kidding!

second of all ringo has one of the most distinct sounds of any drummer. no he doesn't play fancy beats but fancy beat drummers are a dime a dozen.

thirdly, stop with the "Macca". that is so lame. oh gee you're soooooo cool saying "Macca". Geeeeez!

and to everyone else reading this. STOP dissing ringo! he was a beatle and an integral part of the beatles sound. can you imagine the beatles without ringo?

"how could you dis ringo like that? that is so stupid and so lame!!!!!"

Oh come on. I think there's an old anecdote where a reporter asked John Lennon what it was like to play with "the greatest drummer in the world," to which he supposedly replied "He's not even the best drummer in the band."

Point is, despite the questionable veracity of that quote, pretty much everyone disses on Ringo. And I would assume that 100% of the population would feel luckier to be at a Macca show than a Ringo show, so it's not so much a diss as it is blatant fact.

is it true memory to full is a dedication to his late wife?

I love these "intimate" shows by megastars. Sure it's cozy compared to the 100,000 seat arenas they're used to playing, but Mercury Lounge it ain't.

I love old Paul, but I think people should be careful when using the phrase "fallen heroes", particularly in NYC.
