Extra, Extra

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a bank robbery on East Tremont Ave. in the Bronx, two pedestrians struck on 42nd St. and 11th Ave. in Manhattan and one is likely dead, and another bank robbery on Myrtle Ave. in Brooklyn.
  • A Queens car thief's plan of taking a dealer's SUV for a test drive and kicking the salesman out of the car would have worked beautifully if he hadn't surrendered his actual driver's license at the dealership before taking the car for a ride. He was arrested when he returned to the Potamkin dealership to collect his license. Two dozen police were involved in the ensuing foot chase.
  • The M.T.A. is shockingly behind schedule on its anti-terrorism project schedule. No really, it's only completed two out of six scheduled "high priority" projects.
  • A Park Ave. church is suing Con Ed for damage to its nearly century-old pipe organ after the utility allegedly let a damaged steam pipe vent damaging moisture into the instrument's fixtures for weeks.
  • If you're a food blogger, there's a good chance that Mario Batali hates you. Just mentioning Batali yesterday was enough to evince criticism from some of our readers, so the NYC restaurant scene is apparently a contentious place.
  • A Consumer Reports test named Hebrew National the #1-tasting dog in the land. Nathan's came in second with Boar's Head in third place.
  • Any dual Sopranos-Lost fans should be reassured that the latter's shows don't intend to leave them hanging like David Chase. "Mobisodes" will be broadcast over Verizon's wireless network.
  • Despite an approval vote by regulatory members last week, more than 100 neighbors packed into a Williamsburg Community Board meeting last night, halting the approval process of construction of a 24-story tower just off Bedford Ave.

"Two dozen police were arrived in the ensuing foot chase." ??? Nice- "were arrived".

Two dozen were arrived! Nothing wrong with that. (Can't forget the italics)

What's with all the bank robberies? Every Extra, Extra has a bank robbery... is this the Wild West?!?

Extra, Extra:

• Two bandana wearing gunmen held up a LIRR train headed toward the city, robbing its passengers of their precious jewels. When there were no more to be found, they fled the train and hijacked a stagecoach heading West.

[3] I'll admit to posting a lot of bank robbery notices on Extra, Extra. The crimewire can actually be quite mundane, full of car crashes, stabbings, and two-alarm fires. For what they're worth, I think a bank robbery is kind of exciting, without being overtly disturbing like reporting a child that's been raped and set on fire in a vacant lot. Thererefore, it is indeed my go-to crime when I'm writing the Newsmap line item.

As for the Wild West, Billy the Kid was born and raised on Allen St. in the LES. And Capt. Kidd of pirate lore also made downtown his home for several years. So is this the Wild Wild West? Hell yeah; NYC has a long history of pirates and outlaws making their homes here. Don't let the current level of L&O placidity fool you. NYC has always been a seething den of iniquity and will always remain so.

It was not a critique... it was more like "I didn't know banks were robbed in this time and place!"... and so often!

As much as Nathan's is an NY institution, I gotta admit to agreeing with CR on the Hebrew National hotdogs. They's some good eatin'!

where does dirty water dog come in?

Nice picture of the tip of Roosevelt Island facing toward Hell Gate. I kayak with the Long Island City Community boathouse's free and open paddle on Sunday, which take place directly across the East River from there in Queens at Hallet's Cove. I've often wondered what the area around the lighthouse looks like. The closest I've ever gotten is in a kayak on the water. Anyway, great pic!

I think you should report some of the disturbing things on the crimewire because you never know when someone reading it might be able to help in some way.

2. to reveal the possession of (a quality, trait, etc.).

not using that word correctly above.
