Fatal Hit-and-Run on Park Avenue South

2007_06_hrpas.jpgEarly yesterday morning, a 26-year-old Brooklynite was killed when crossing Park Avenue South. Matthew Hopkins had been walking west on East 22nd Street when a car traveling south struck him at around 4:09AM; witnesses say the car didn't even slow down. Hopkins was pronounced dead at Bellevue at 4:30AM.

Police are looking for a 1991 maroon Honda with damage to the front; call Crime Stoppers (800-577-TIPS) with any information. And the Post reports that Hopkins moved from Maryland to Crown Heights, to join his girlfriend, Krystal Lynch. Lynch told the Post, "The last time I saw him, he gave me a hug and a kiss and said, 'You're the only woman I've ever wanted.' We knew we were always meant to be. He was one of a kind. He was so sweet and so understanding"

what a fucking tragedy...

This IS a tragedy. I worked with Matt, and I speak for all of his coworkers when I say that he was the sweetest, most patient and most human person in this office. We will all miss him tremendously and are appalled by the inhumanity exhibited by the driver. Our thoughts are with his family and other friends as they grieve. We share in this sadness.

As one of Krystle's closest friends, I know that Matt meant the world to her and she meant the world to him. Although he was from Maryland her family and my family brought Matt into our lives with open and loving arms. Krystle and Matt, Cliff and myself would go to the movies, clubs, etc. We planned to have so many more memories together. And now as I sit here and type this I am still in utter disbelief that this has happened. My heart aches for the future of Krystle and Matt that will never be. Our lives are all changed forever by this. I love you Matt and although you are most certainly in a better place, are hearts are all broken that you had to leave us so soon.

My condolences to all who knew Matthew Hopkins. It sounds like he was truly an exceptional human being.

Will there be a memorial service for Matt? If it is in NYC, please let us know where and when it will be held.

I wanted to first and foremost send my thoughts and prayers out to Matt's family. He was a good guy. I went to Mongomery Village Middle School and Watkins Mill High School with him and also played beltway football with him when we were younger. Its a crying shame something like this happened to such a wonderful person. He never made a single enemy. He will be missed RIP Matt.

To the Parents of Mathew Hopkins
First I would like to say "CONGRATULATIONS" on raising an outstanding young man in these difficult times. Second I would like to say "THANK YOU" for sharing Mathew with us.
Mathew was truly one of a kind.
My 14-year-old son, who is Krystle Lynch's younger cousin, is very protective of her. Even thou he is younger he likes to play the role of the big brother for her. I remember the day he came and said to me " Mom, Mathew is really a cool guy, its OK for him to hang out with my Krystle." That is high praise coming from him.
Mathew touched all our lives in a wonderful way.
If I had to make a list, it would be endless.
When my son becomes of age, if he is anything like the young man Mathew was, I will consider myself truly blessed.
As parents we do our best and leave the rest in God's hands.
Right now Matt is with God
He will be missed

Matthew is truly one of those extraordinary individuals that was placed on this earth to bring joy to everyone around him. I am so unbelievably blessed to have ever met him and his warm, caring, sweet personality made my days at Hampton so much more enjoyable. I will never, ever forget Matthew's kind and gentle spirit and I cant wait until I can see him again. My thoughts and prayers are with Matthew's family and his fiance. God let us borrow His angel but he wanted him back. We will see you soon Matthew:)
