Family Says Di Fara Will Re-Open This Week

2007_06_difara.jpg

Something to complement Slice's Sunday item about Di Fara possibly reopening this week: Reader Jim sent this photograph a friend took of the beloved pizzeria - this note has been written on a pizza box!

Last week, Di Fara had been closed by the Department of Health; most of our readers were okay with Dominick DeMarco not using gloves but were concerned with evidence of mice.

Listen...I love Dom and DiFara's, but why do they think they don't have to abide by the same rules every other similarly beloved restaurant does? Donovan's, Spicy Mina, Shake Shack, Babbo...all the spots that make this city swoon have to play by the same rules. Get over it. It's the price of serving food to the public.

Yeah, I love DiFara's, but this kind of self-pitying notice is actually a pretty big turn-off. With most disputes it's usually smarter to say nothing, to act as though it is beneath you.

Forgetting about whether or not the pies are as great as they used to be, or the crowd, etc.

I don't know how the city lets them keep re-opening if all they do is fail inspections and act like scofflaws. If you keep speeding or drunk driving, you lose your license forever. If you're a doc or lawyer and keep practicing poorly, you lose your license forever. If you run an unsanitary kitchen and have mice/rats, and don't fix the problem after 2 years, you should be unable to own/operate a restaurant forever.

This goes for any establishment, whether it's an institution like this place, or you're Starbucks and have 1000 spots in the city. And we should be like 99% of LA county and require that A-F letter grades be posted on the front door of any food service establishment.

There should be a three strike rule: People who get closed down three times by the DOH should be banned from running or working in food establishments for life. Dom and DiFara's is DISGUSTING! Shame on them!

the friend in question being Andy ;-)

Jim

yikes, lots of totalitarian pro-technocracy soup-nazis on the board today.

anyway, i LOVE how they wrote their note on a pizza box.

best wishes and godspeed, Dom et fam.

Yeah, man. Fight the power. Keep the government out of my life unless they're stopping something I don't like!

I think we all went over this last week...

...if you've ever prepared and served yourself or anyone else a meal without latex gloves...

...if your parents or grandparents or aunts and uncles or even random party dinner hosts have ever prepared and served you a meal without latex gloves...

...if you've ever eaten outdoors, at a bbq, at a picnic, lunch at the park, with insects and mammals and vehicle fumes mixing it up in the air around you...

...then JEBUS KRUSTO, take it easy and stop with the clean freak madness and enjoy pizza made by a guy who's been making them (WELL!) his entire life!

Personally, I would prefer it if people who I don't know and whom I pay to prepare my food would wear latex gloves. There are degrees of trust, and mine doesn't extend to Dominick.

I thought the consensus was not that he wasn't using gloves but the vermin droppings that were still not corrected. I believe someone mentioned vermin droppings in and around the flour sacks.

Can someone please take nokian95 emails and proceed to spam him with gay porn?

why should I be relieved that Dominick doesn't have to take a class? Sounds like he could use one.

"forced to sign quite unfair stipulations" - what a crock of shit. If you think it's unfair, don't sign it.

The persecution complex here is amazing. You sell pizza. You're not Christ on the cross.

Posted by; "Still Not Amused" Look the rules are the same all over the city . All they have to do is abide by them and everything will be fine ! It just so happens that the city is on one of it's "Binges" and this restaurant has earned there wharf ! Deal with it and move on .

According to news reports, they had something like 50+ violations plus a mouse and rat problem. I don't care if Dom wears gloves or takes a class. But the place is just a skankhole that needs a serious cleaning.

When the FRONT of the store where the food is served looks skanky then you just know that the back is even worse. Spare us the persecution complex and just clean the damned place up.

Who are those numbnuts who will waste a whole Saturday waiting around in that pigsty?

why does it have to be gay porn? how bout breeder porn?

[3] is right about letter grades being a good idea.

I've been eating Difaras now almost 30 years.

Living proof that pizza is good, Dom =| killer

Based on the violations noted by the DOH and Dom's reluctance to change his ways, I think we know what additives makes his secret sauce so special.

You're all a bunch of morons. Go eat at Grimaldies. No one is forcing you into Dom's place. The people that go there and wait an hour or 2 for a pie are quite aware of the type of place it is, and guess what...we dont care, we still love it. Damn tourists...
