The tabloids and cable news media got a weekend windfall when a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ordered socialite Paris Hliton back to jail. The Post called her a "Wailbird" while the Daily News described her as a "blubbering blond". And let's not even discuss the ridiculous coverage of her arrest at her home and the TV helicopters following her to court on TV.
To summarize: Judge Michael Sauer was angry that the LA County Sheriff's office released Hilton only three days into her 23-day sentence. In fact, Sauer wants Hilton to serve the full 45-day sentence he handed down in May. The sheriff's office claimed that Hilton has "severe problems" of the medical sort - though they did not provide the judge with the papers explaining what those problems might be - and felt that a low-level offender like Hilton should be released. Anyway, Sauer demanded a Friday hearing, which turned into a media circus because apparently Hilton thought she could participate by phone (what?). But that was not the case, so Judge Sauer sent a deputy to forcibly take Hilton from her home in handcuffs, a scene which launched what the NY Times called "a parody of O. J. Simpson’s low-speed chase more than a decade ago." (Yes, even the Times put an article about Hilton, though really about celebrity justice, on today's front page!) You can see an assortment of Paris Hilton meets the law videos on TMZ.

Must be a slow news day for the tabloids...
If she needs to be released for "Medical Reasons", being such a high profile case, the Sheriff really should have discussed it with the Judge in advance.
It might be true that others in her situation got out just as early, but considering who this is, what did the Sheriff expect would happen? CBS already interviewed a Minority woman who served more time than Paris Hilton...
Bottom line, she's legally an adult. If she didn't bitch about it so much prior to going in, maybe she would have been released early, But her "F___ You, I'm Paris!!!" attitude challenged the system to keep her in. Also, she was driving drunk. That's not a joke and she could have easily have killed someone.
Bet she stays in a Prison Medical ward her entire stay.
I hope they go after Lindsay next!
I work in the mental health field and there are plenty of detention facilities that can handle medical issues likes the ones that Paris has. They also could have moved her into a different medical incarceration facility until this was resolved.
Phoning into court can happen it her charge is not a felony, BTW.
Also, I was also sentenced to 36 months of probation at a point in my life and if I was arrested once during that time, I would be doing a lot more then 45 days. Remember, she was arrested TWICE after being given probation.
What I don't understand is - don't the Hilton's have a team of publicists who could have coached her on how to handle this more graciously?
bklynd-
I am sure they do, but when the Sherriff just shows up at your house and cuffs you, there is not a whole lot of time for positive spin.
Why is this on Gothamist?
[8] the real question is why is this on NYC papers like the post and the new when there is a war that is going on.
it's not gothamist fault the world is insane.
I gotta agree with #6. At least Lohan is from Wrong Island - so its somewhat relevant. But this is just dumb.
[Wayne Newton] Schadenfreude, darling schadenfreude. Paris sure has me so annoyed. [/Wayne Newton]
i've been reading gothamist lately because it seemed a little more interesting than the usual media outlets. i'm having second thoughts now. we live in a society of people who get ego gratification in seeing someone in the public eye self-destruct. people will say, "well paris wants the attention?" but why give it to her? she's mentally ill and self-destructive and if god forbid she kills herself or ends up dead through her reckless behavior will the masses find this entertaining as well? what we have here is a lost soul (hilton) with a junkie mentality addicted to attention, a vicious media, and a blood-thirsty public. why contribute to this jen? i was hoping gothamist was a bit more progessive and not another tabloid. and writing about it by saying it's a story in other tabloids and we're not one of them is no excuse.
