City Gehry-Excited Over New Playground

2007_06_fish.jpgVarious officials followed up with some more thoughts about Frank Gehry designing his very first playground for Battery Park. Mayor Bloomberg said, “Everything Frank Gehry touches is unique, and I’m sure it will be a great park." Check out this quote, via the Post:

"I once gave money to redo a children's playground in Central Park. I can't go in it because you have to have a child. But when I look in it, people seem to be having a great time and it's doing well."
Ha! It's true - there will be way too many adults who will want to play. We bet tons of parents will be able to convince their design-loving friends to baby-sit.

One out-of-town 10-year-old told the NY Times how Battery Park could improve itself: "If this park had a little more grass, it’d look nicer and attract more people, maybe.” Kid, we're totally with you - it feels like the park's renovations has taken decades, if only years.

And the Mayor said he'd love it if more architects offered to design city parks. Who would you want to see a park from? Jean Nouvel? Santiago Calatrava? Zaha Hadid?

i'm looking forward to reading the posts by all the poseurs who think they know something about architecture and who think it's ever-so-cool to say frank gehry is overrated.

it's very cool to think things are overrated.

Gehry is not an architect.
A no talent hack and asshole in league with some evil SOBs, but not an architect.

user-pic

wow, that took even shorter than i expected.

way to live up to the promise there toby. (and, just for the record, your qualifications for jundging architecture are what again?)

Qualifications?

The two eyes in my head.

Gehry sucks bat-shit off cave walls.

Noguchi has some cool playground designs, at least one of which has actually been implemented for realz.

might be cool to get one of these up in nyc.

I'd say Gehry is much more qualified to be designing playgrounds than he is buildings

user-pic

how exactly does gehry suck?

perhaps you honor role kids can explain to us why? don't get mad... just try and vent your angry words into an intelligent post, if you can.

Talk to anyone who has to deal with the Stata Center at MIT. It's hideous, confusing to find your way around in, and wastes a great deal of space. It also went way over budget, probably more so than if it were a normal building.

No, I'd say it's the Gehry admirers who are the poseurs. Thanks.

Form is meant to follow function. The problem with gehry is that he designs in big broad gestural strokes, without actually thinking about the organization of the insides of his buildings. His brand of architecture is more like car-chitecture, ie. meant to be seen not inhabited.

It takes a hell of a lot more to design a building that not only looks good but also functions well and is efficient; something I can't say I've ever seen in a Gehry building.

I wouldn't say Gehry sucks but he sure as hell isn't "unique". I'm sure Bloomberg just read what was put in front of him and probably did the mental equivalent of rolling his eyes when he said it.

And when I saw the picture above I thought it was the band shell in Chicago's Millenium Park. He's been coasting on Bilbao for years now. The curves are tired.

The Noguchi museum in LIC helped design a playground that's being built across the street:

i'm not a gehry fan by any stretch, but i wanted to hear the intellectual end of it, not broad staements of "he sucks".

thank you all for your comments on his suckery.

gehry sucks. and i like to wear a beret. and drink high end coffee. so there. oh and i use a mac. look at me.

Thanks for the Noguchi links. I love Noguchi. Very nice.

Don't they have enough good things Downtown. Why can't we spread this design around the 5 Boros. Would the Bronx ever get a Gehry park?

Calling Frank Gehry an architect is like calling O.J. Simpson a plastic surgeon. Gehry knows how to design a building, just as O.J. knows how to cut up a woman's face, but we wish they wouldn't. Also, anyone who is a party to the Bruce Ratner Atlantic Yards monstrocity should be run out of town on a rail.

This looks less like something designed for children than a vanity project for politicians and other adults.

For the amount of money they must be blowing on this, they could do more modest rehabs of perhaps dozens of playgrounds around the city.

Oh, and Gehry's part in the abomination that is Atlantic Yards? Inexcusable.
