Pencil This In

TOMORROW!: (Due to expected rain, this event will take place tomorrow.) It's that time again...Shakespeare in the Park is back and kicking off its season tonight. Want to add some tragedy to your summer sunset this evening? Then head over to get tickets starting at 1pm today for Romeo and Juliet.

You can pick up your free tickets starting at 1pm at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park, or from 1 to 3pm at The Public Theater at 425 Lafayette Street. The limit is 2 per person, and expect a long line!

9pm // Delacorte Theater, Central Park [79th and 5th] // Free with ticket

2007_06_arts_pipettes.jpgMUSIC: Before they take the stage at the High Line Ballroom, The Pipettes (pictured) will perform an acoustic set for a much more intimate crowd. If you like polka-dots and pretty voices, don't pass up this opportunity for some free tunes.

7pm // Other Music [15 E 4th St] // Free

SCIENCE: Café Scientifique serves up coffee and wine with a side of science. If you have something to share, or if you just want to absorb some facts, head over there for an informal night of knowledge. Tonight the topic is "The Most Magnetic Object in the Universe" and the discussion will be led by Columbia University's David Helfand. The monthly even is taking the summer off after this, so it's your last chance to learn until September!

7:30pm // Rialto [265 Elizabeth St] // Free

THEATER: Facing East is the New York premiere of a drama by Mormon author Carol Lynn Pearson, whose husband died from AIDS after outing himself. The story concerns one Mormon couple’s struggle to come to terms with their son’s homosexuality in the wake of his suicide. (The father is an up-and-coming radio personality making a bid for national syndication.) It sounds like heavy stuff, but we’re told the Salt Lake City company Plan-B has brought it to town with grace and tenderness. Martin Denton found it deeply moving, writing that it gives New Yorkers the chance to “experience the loves and sorrows of these pained, imperfect souls.” - John Del Signore

8pm // Atlantic Stage 2 [330 W 16th St] // Buy tickets here.

Actually Shakespeare in the Park starts TOMORROW (see www.publictheater.org). They were supposed to start today, but yesterday evening they canceled today's show because of expected rain.

If last year is any indication, if you aren't on line by 9 AM you probably won't get tickets. And you have to be there very early on the weekends.

And the downside is your proximity to the front of the line seems to have no influence on your later proximity to the stage. Maybe someone in the know can confirm if the tickets are distributed somewhat randomly (at least by section).
