Weiner Wants No More Choppers Over Manhattan

2007_06_chopper.jpgRepresentative Anthony Weiner, he of 2009 mayoral ambitions, wants to introduce legislation to ban helicopters flying over Manhattan. While the bill would allow "police, medical and other authorized helicopter traffic" (probably news choppers), Weiner said, "We are taking a common-sense step to make New York safer" by restricting all other helicopters to fly over water only. He also said, "I am concerned about helicopters flying over a densely populated city. I think it's dangerous, and I think it poses a threat."

Helicopters at the Manhattan heliports would be allowed, and all passengers and baggage would need to be screened by the TSA. One helicopter charter owner told the Daily News, "[Weiner's] pretty much trying to beat up on the helicopter tourism industry."

Last year, after the Lidle plane crash, politicians asked for airspace to be restricted. Earlier this month, Weiner supported the NTSB's recommendation that pilots flying small fixed-wing aircraft over the East River without air traffic control be banned.

I have taken a helicopter tour of Manhattan, and it only flies over water anyway. Maybe if I paid more I could have seen something good, but most of the (cheaper) tour is a view of New Jersey.

Not that I'm a huge fan of helicopter noise, but if this is the best idea he can come up with to improve the safety of the citizens of manhattan, he's a complete idiot.

He wants to ban all helicopters, yet allow medical, police, traffic and airport transport helicopters. What helicopters are actually being banned again?

With all the helicopters going down in the streets of Manhattan, I'm glad somebody is finally doing something.
What a tool.

I actually think that this is a good idea. For once someone is acting preemptively and using a little common sense.

Lest we forget the accident with the helicopter on the Pan Am Building thirty years ago that killed a couple of people, including some on the ground.

i live on east 6th and Ave B and i hear them circling above, nonstop, all the time. it's started to annoy me and, strangely, been making me anxious... i hear what you guys are saying, but i think theres an aspect of noise pollution for the people who live and work here as well.

"the accident with the helicopter on the Pan Am Building thirty years ago that killed a couple of people"

A COUPLE PEOPLE THIRTY YEARS AGO?!?!? we clearly need MORE helicopters, they obviously are much much safter than cars. How many people die every day in cars? BAN THE CARS FIRST.

Weiner is going after an easy straw man, and shamefully and manipulatively playing up the fear angle. I'm sick of politicians whose only platform is exploiting fear.

The crash atop the Pan Am Building is the reason that rooftop helicopter landings were banned in the City. That's why all helicopter traffic to Manhattan has to go to either W.30th, E.34th or Battery Park. There's only one helicopter corridor over Manhattan, anyway, and it's up in the 70s. South of roughly Greenwich Village, you have to stay below 1500', and the preponderance of Very Tall Buildings make that an unattractive prospect. As you get towards Midtown, the airspace is controlled all the way to the surface (due to LaGuardia), and the "terrain" is even more hazardous. This is largely a non-issue, but puts Weiner's name in the news - something I fear will become more and more common in the runup to 2009.

Re: the Pan Am crash - IIRC, one of the guys was a snuff film producer. So, being filleted was maybe not such a pity.

ME, I worry about jets cruising down the middle of the island.

Hi all,

Thansk very much for ignoring the fact that at least one of the people that lost there lives in that crash was a successful guy, with a family and children.
That were robbed of having a father.

SO BE VERY VERY CAREFUL before you inflict or suggest your opinions and suggestions upon others.

And SP you lonely self indignant fuck! How dare you compare a helicopter crash from 1977 to modern day technology
Do me a favor, take us all a favor, take your lonely ass, and your self righteous attitude climb to the top of the met life building....and jump. Better yet dive, so you can see you future coming at you!

And the next time you drive, do it fast, and alone and into a wall. You piece of shit!
