NYU Heads to Paris

nycinparis.jpgPerhaps New York University finally felt that it owned enough New York real estate, because now it's thinking about buying up parts of Paris, France. The American University of Paris is building new facilities on an island in the Seine in a partnership with NYU, and hopes to one day become absorbed into the New York school's system. 90% of the Paris school's students hail from outside of France and the American University of Paris has a year-old reciprocity agreement with NYU that allow enrollees to earn degrees from either school.

The New York Sun describes the plans for the new facility, which include two glass-clad buildings designed by Jean-Paul Viguier that are scheduled to open in time for the start of the 2010 school year. The facility would be located on Seguin Island in the Seine, near the suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt. The school is considering running a water taxi service for students.

considering how much new-yorkers love NYU, I can't wait to see the Parisians welcome this new development with open arms.

"90% of the Paris school's students hale from..."

who grammar checked this? me talk pretty one day

hale=free from disease or infirmity
hail=to have as one's place of birth or residence

For what it's worth, if you look at the island on Google Maps, it's kinda reminiscent of the West Side rail yards. Developed, but looks like mostly empty space, storage and warehouses. Zoom out a bit and you'll see that it's a couple of miles outside the center of the city. So while I'm not a huge fan of NYU buying up loads and loads of property, at least in this case it's not like they're buying up prime real estate or anything.
