Yesterday, the man suspected of raping and torturing a 23-year-old woman in her apartment pleaded not guilty to the attack. However, police say that they have DNA evidence linking ex-con Robert Williams to the scene. The victim, a graduate student at Columbia's Journalism School, remembered that the attacker wore one of her T-shirts, which was thrown into a wastebasket, and the police have DNA from Williams' spit (he spat into a station house wastebasket).
Williams was indicted on 71 counts yesterday, and was escorted into the Manhattan Supreme Court by "six armed court officers in riot gear, " according to the Daily News. Williams had apparently "wrapped two razor blades in tissue paper, put them in a balloon and stuffed them into his rectum."
Williams not only allegedly slit the victim's eyelids in an attempt to blind her and allegedly tried to set her bed (with her tied to it) on fire, he also allegedly tried to get rid of DNA evidence by throwing bleach and boiling water on her. Here is How Stuff Works' explanation of DNA evidence.

This guy is an animal. He really needs to be taken out of t he gene pool.
He is sickening. Since he pleaded not guilty, that means his sentence will be even harsher? I really hope so.
This happened in my new neighborhood, and I'm sure glad they caught the guy. I sorta feel like everybody in the neighborhood and at Columbia should get one good whack at him, but I hope he at least serves the hardest time there is.
I wonder how the victim is recovering? Last I heard she was still in the hospital. I can't imagine...
TayshawnJohnston, you're an asshole.
Look, whoever did this is scum of the lowest order, but let's remember that Williams is innocent until a jury finds him guilty. Remember how everyone piled on the Duke lacrosse players and then felt really stupid when the charges turned out to be false?
There's no comparison, Josh. There was no evidence in the Duke case, only the accusations of one woman. This guy is an ex-con, and every one of his actions like the razors shows a propensity for violence and sociopathy. Notice how his lawyer refuses to let authorities take DNA samples. What innocent man doesn't want DNA testing?
Josh: That's over-the-top political correctness, and it's very dangerous.Brightliner is right -- no comparison between the cases. Stop typing -- you only sound foolish.
She's recovering very well. There was an article in the Daily News that told of her graduation from Columbia, which means she must be out of the hospital now.
#9 Concerned: Yes, I have read other updates from people who know her or know her family: Apparently her vision was *not* permanently damaged, and she is indeed out of the hospital, and doctors are pleased with her recovery. I've also read that she is starting to venture outside and to see friends, all of which is great. She has a long road ahead of her, but has a very strong family and church support system, so that's the "good" side of this tragedy.....
