As if former Mayor Rudy Giuliani were giving a perfect example of his shiny, accessible campaign demeanor, which is decidedly different from his mayoral behavior, none was better than the Tuesday confrontation between the presidential candidate and some protesters. You can see a video on WNBC 4 where a two people separately ask Giuliani why he let first responders go into the World Trade Center, if he knew that the towers would fall down. From WNBC:
Giuliani replied by saying, "I didn't realize the towers would collapse." He later added, "No one that I know of had any idea they would implode. That was a complete surprise."The hecklers followed him to various events earlier this week, which were party of his birthday fund-raising push. As FDNY deputy chief Jim Riches, whose son died in the WTC, told the Observer, “If somebody can tell me what he did on 9/11 that was so good, I’d love to hear it. All he did was give information on the TV. He did nothing. He stood there with a TV reporter and told everyone what was going on. And he got it from everybody else down at the site.”WNBC has obtained the transcript of Giuliani's appearance with Jennings, from the Giuliani 2008 campaign. This is the verbatim of the issue in question:
"I--I went down to the scene and we set up headquarters at 75 Barkley Street, which was right there with the police commissioner, the fire commissioner, the head of emergency management, and we were operating out of there when we were told that the World Trade Center was going to collapse. And it did collapse before we could actually get out of the building, so we were trapped in the building for 10, 15 minutes, and finally found an exit and got out, walked north, and took a lot of people with us."
And if you watch the video, Giuliani remains poised, polite, and even smiling.

Wow, this story has been up over 5 minutes and Tim N. hasn't chimed in with one of his anti-Giuliani rants.
Ha, posed and cool throughout. Well, he is still the devil. He ruined new york, and now his tired old ass is set to ruin whatever scrap of a country we have left when dubya finally gets out of the white house.
hey, instead of heckling him, why dont we send that guy with drug resistant TB to go cough on him?
He ruined new york
Really? Please, do explain your thinking. I'm serious. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
Johnny Thunders,
I was wondering what possible redeeming qualities the TB guy could possibly have! Although, perhaps TB could aim a little loftier than the ex-mayor of NYC and perhaps go after a couple people down in DC.
It's not open to debate that Rudy destroyed NYC in every single way, and if you think I exaggerate, email me for more details: empiregoodness@yahoo.com.
Here are just a few examples of tens of thousands. (I was a paid researcher who investigated Rudy for years. I can tell you tons of stuff no one else can.)
EX: in just 8 years, Rudy DOUBLED NYC's debt (which was 300 years old)!
EX: Rudy broke so many laws that he was forced by the courts to pay over $500 MILLION per year (with money he simply took from YOU) to settle the lawsuits. (I asked for $35,000 and got it.)
EX: Rudy had the most corrupt administration in America (and if you don't know the name Anne Copaccia [sp?] then you must admit you know nothing about Rudy).
Rudy even ADMITTED on many occasions to his corruption.
EX: look at his interview in Time's Man Of The Year issue and he admits he knew some of his dad's mobster behavior, which is funny since Rudy often said his dad was his role model and taught him his ethics!
I can go on for hours. Just look at some of the video I posted on YouTube which shows WITH YOUR OWN EYES how much Rudy "fixed" NYC! Try links off "Rudy Giuliani 9/11 scandals"
The guy even tried to steal the widows fund money until SPitzer stopped him!
Shall I go on (and on)??
Every positive thing about Rudy you read in the papers was FALSE and I can prove it to you.
Please contact me if you care about the truth.
ALso, to any people who think they like Rudy, I'll bet you $20 that when you hear / see the facts you completely change your opinion of this criminal.
Stop being naive and believing everything politicians tell you.
empiregoodness@yahoo.com
Those are some weak-ass hecklers.
No screed today, just that RG should probably get used to this type of thing.
PS to #3: Remember, you asked for it...
I put the name "Anne Copaccia" into Google and got ZERO hits. Do you know how hard it is to get zero hits?
i'm sorry but your cut and pasted list of alleged things about how Rudy "ruined" New York don't tell me much. A person can be corrupt without ruining a place. I want to know how the city is ruined.
I asked for $35,000 and got it.
What are you talkng about here?
Rudy had the most corrupt administration in America
You say that like it's fact. Are you even going to try to back it up? I counter with Richard Nixon. Survey says I win.
I could go on and on as well.
Christopher's listing of Giuliani's failures and shortcomings is a good start, but the list could go on and on. The Giuliani administration lost 27 out of 29 First Amendment cases it fought. It demonized an entire city's worth of black and latino young men, with the frequent stop-and-frisk tactics that characterized those neighborhoods. Unfamiliar with that, serious? It's probably because you are white, and suburban. That's Giuliani's base for a reason. He built a reputation for "law and order" (which, as Christopher points out wasn't so much law, and often illegal, and the order was for the haves) and claimed responsibility for a crime drop that was mirrored and exceeded in other large American cities during the same period. He used government as a tool of personal retribution. He is an ememy of art, and of freedom of speech and expression. He sold Manhattan (and much of Brooklyn) over to corporate usurpers and out-of-state thrill-seekers . The vast majority of New York neighborhoods, and a good deal of people reading this, are mere transients; bar-hoppers looking for the next party, ready to split when marriage and childbirth call. That is, in large part, a result of the Giuliani myth. Quite simply, anyone who supports Giuliani is either ignorant of the man and his record, or a closet racist who loves Rudy's ability to get tough with "the darkies." How else would you explain the fact that 72 percent of New Yorkers detest the man, and his support rises the further you get from anyone who knows anything about Giuliani. Read a book, serious. Preferably something by Wayne Barrett. Then you'll begin to grasp the depth of your ignorance.
First rule of the internent, don't poke the crazy person, don't poke the crazy person.
On the other hand, this is entertaining...
Rudy Giuliani, in the end, was not good for New York. His record on the Trade Center toxins is deplorable. It was absolutely irresponsible to claim that that area was safe. It would have been better to say, "we don't know." And now, years later, otherwise healthy people (the first responders and some who got trapped in the plume) are developing rare cancers and some have already died. President of the United States? After the mess of George Bush, this is the best the republicans can do?
Rudy ranks with Bill Gates as one of the greatest figures of the last 50 years. Rudy's policies, ideas and changes have made NYC and its residents better in incalculable ways. It was great how he handled the leftard, moonbat Truthers who parasitize and infest us all like leeches.
"who loves Rudy's ability to get tough with "the darkies."
Yes, I did love that. And Thank God he did. We are all safer as a result.
9/11 was the best thing to happen to Guliani's career (although he did nothing on that day but go on TV stating the obvious - "be calm" etc.)
Without that tragedy, he would have been mostly forgotten by now.
"it's not open to debate that Rudy destroyed NYC in every single way"
Really ?
The usual brownshirt lib shutting down free speech, heh?
"Here are just a few examples of tens of thousands. (I was a paid researcher who investigated Rudy for years. I can tell you tons of stuff no one else can.)"
The vast Rove conspiracy theory again. List them all with proof.
I think one should ask the workers at the WTC clean-up who were told that the site was safe and the Firemen without adequate radio converage if they think Rudy was good for the city. (And yes, I know radio coverage is still crappy.)
Oh, and thank God for people like Doctorted. It's people like him that reminds me why I wouldn't vote for Giuliani if he were the last candidate on Earth.
I could sit here for days and never finish. Just 2 to get started:
When asked about why new radios were not purchased to facilitate communications between the NYPD and FDNY, Giuliani's reply was "the technology was not available".
Shortly afterward, Giuliani Partners was hired by Nextel. Nextel was later recommended as a best solution for cross department communication. They receive stock options. Sprint merged with Nextel. You can check the historical pricing yourself.
"The technology was not available"
Giuliani decided the Office of Emergency Management should be built, despite protest by his own advisors, at 7 World Trade. he was warned that 7WTC is a high profile target, and placing an OEM on the 23rd floor atop a huge stockpile of diesel fuel was not a good idea.
The OEM is now in Bklyn.

Why should Mr. Rudolph Giuliani capitalize on 9/11?
How was he "affected by the tragedy" any differently than you and me?
How does that make him an "expert" on security and terrorism?
Shrewd. Opportunist.
I think one should ask the workers at the WTC clean-up who were told that the site was safe and the Firemen without adequate radio converage if they think Rudy was good for the city.
Last week it was the EPA and Christine Whitman's fault. Today it Rudy's fault.
So essentially you're nostalgic for the Son of Sam and blackout days of the 1970s.
The most the Giuliani did to ruin your New York was preside over a drop in the crime rate. We can argue all week over whether it was "bold new police tactics" or Freakonomics reason (that legalization of abortion in the 1970s eliminated as vast number of would be teenage criminals in the 1990s). Whatever the reason, New York became safe and the yuppies from the suburbs moved back into the city after their kids graduated college. Many rich yuppies never left and decided it was ok to raise kids in the city - which contrasts with you theory of everyone being a transient. Couple the low crime rate with globalization causing 1) high demand for financial services which is New York's bread and butter industry 2) low global interest rates and a boom in the value of real estate 3) easy movement of capital allowing foreigners to buy up residential property.
So if you want to blame someone, blame the rich folks that keep moving in and creating the market forces that make it possible for their to be luxury condos on every block. To say one man did it all it ludicrous.
Forget the 9/11 fiasco, and look at the fact that NOTHING was built while Giuliani was in office -- no schools, no bridges or highways -- just his emergency control room in 7 WTC!!! Damn -- he couldn't even get the public toilets built (mostly 'cause he wouldn't/couldn't deal with the demand that more of them be handicapped accessible)
The man was a useless bully who accomplished nothing. Crime rates dropped in all cities during the years of his administration -- it was a question of economics, demographics and the crack epidemic running its natural course.
Giuliani decided the Office of Emergency Management should be built, despite protest by his own advisors, at 7 World Trade. he was warned that 7WTC is a high profile target, and placing an OEM on the 23rd floor atop a huge stockpile of diesel fuel was not a good idea.
This act alone ruined New York. It ruined it so much that everyone left. Property values plummeted. Millions of jobs were lost.
And on Nextel, sorry that I'm not following you here. That Giuliani's firm did business with Nextel after he left office has what exactly to do with Giuliani not buying good radios before 9/11?
And as far as Rudy "cashing in" on 9/11 just about every Congressperson that leaves office "cashes in" in far worse ways: by taking millions from corporations to lobby their former colleagues. Republicans do it. Democrats do it. That your "outrage" is focused on one guy just shows how partisan most of you are. Where's the outrage when Bill Clinton gets $200,000 a speech? Where's the outrage that Mr. Two Americas John Edward went to work for a hedge fund. Oh that's right. They're Democrats. It's ok. that's just the free market at work. Suddenly democrats are embracing the free market. Irony alert.
Oh, and thank God for people like Doctorted. It's people like him that reminds me why I wouldn't vote for Giuliani if he were the last candidate on Earth.
There's a real shocker, Elderta. You'd vote for Hitler if he ran as Democrat.
Oh hardy har har, partisan hack. That's the most original comeback I've ever heard. Ooh boy. Oh man, you are real astute! I'd vote for Hitler! Wow, that's a knee slapper! You should try writing speeches for Bush. That line is about as good as the great majority of his stuff.
And blah blah blah, I know it's difficult for you to think that more than one person can be found at fault for anything, but really, you should learn to think with both sides of your brain.
He was a lousy Mayor and he would make a lousy President. What a nightmare.
I'm not an expert at Republican demographics, but for some reason I just don't see Rudy resonating with the NASCAR crowd the way Bush did.
If we believe the supposed power Evangelical voters have, will they show up to cast their ballot for cross-dressing, wife-hopping Giuliani?
And what about the radios, Rudy? Let's talk about the radios!
To all of the trolls who think of this sissy-boy with a bully's mask as some kind of hero, Rudy bought 2-way radios for the NYC Firefighters that were about 10 years outdated. It wasn't his call to make, but he did. He knew best. These radios did not work inside of buildings. (Now, think about New York City for a moment. Buildings, right? Right. The whole city is buildings. To the firefighters, radios that don't let them talk with one another inside buildings are useless.) They did not let the Firefighters and Police talk with one another. Police and Firefighters NEED to communicate, during fires and especially during emergencies. The Firefighters did not want them, and said so. The firefighter brass did not want them, and said so. Rudy knew best, of course, and gave the no-bid contract (in violation of city and state laws) to a campaign donor and bought the radios. The ones that the Firefighters and Police did not want. The ones that did not work properly. The ones with outdated technology and big price tags. On Sept. 11, the Firefighters inside the World Trade Center buildings had only these useless radios. They could not communicate with one another inside the buildings, and they could not communicate with the Police. Those inside could not hear their commanders telling them to get out because the buildings were going to collapse. They never heard the Police helicopters, circling overhead, telling them to get out because the buildings were going to collapse. They died carrying those expensive, worthless radios that Rudy bought from a campaign contributor. Blood money. Blood money. Who knows how many brave men and women died on that day because RUDY'S RADIOS DID NOT WORK?!?!?! I would say that their brave blood is on his hands, but I have too much respect for them, and too much contempt for Rudy..
So, Rudy... tell us about the radios, won't you? Tell us all about the radios.
As for the often-cited drop in crime, people who have actually studied this (as opposed to some of the posters on this site) know that there was a similar drop in crime nationwide. There was also a much better and effective use of the Police, thanks to Chief William Bratton (whom Rudy fired because HE wanted the credit for everything good happening in NYC) and his strong right hand man, Jack Maple. There were more Police on the streets of NYC because Bill Clinton, along with balancing the Federal Budget, allocated funds for more than 100,000 more cops in America. (One of dozens of campaign promises he either met or exceeded... as opposed to the last few repug presidents, who have never kept a promise.) David Dinkins went after these funds and put them into the NYPD... but, of course, Rudy claimed that it was HE who got that funding.
"The likelihood is that more people will eventually die from the cleanup than from the original accident," says David Worby, an attorney representing thousands of cleanup workers in a class-action lawsuit against the city. "Giuliani wears 9/11 like a badge of honor, but he screwed up so badly."
Rudy is a bully and has shown little respect for anyone who disagrees with him. His children despise him and will not be seen in public with him. Were it not for 9.11 and the incredible spin Rudy pulled off he would be a two bit lobbiest for Al D'Amato. I think we can do better.
This act alone ruined New York. It ruined it so much that everyone left. Property values plummeted. Millions of jobs were lost."
Ruined New York? I'm not too sure about that spin. This clearly shows that only his opinion matters. Not yours. Not his own advisors. Just Rudy. Do you disagree that it was not a good idea to put the Office of Emergency Management at 7WTC? Let's hear your take on it.
And on Nextel, sorry that I'm not following you here. That Giuliani's firm did business with Nextel after he left office has what exactly to do with Giuliani not buying good radios before 9/11?
Don't be sorry. I'm not sure if Giuliani & Co. wanted to spell it out for you. On the 9/11 commission, he testified that the technology that allowed effective communication was "not available". Shortly afterwards, after being retained by Nextel, he recommends them as the absolute best solution. Maybe Nextel just developed a breakthrough 2 way cellular technology? Rudy is the self proclaimed terror expert. Who are you to question?
So, enlighten us. Aside from trumpeting 9/11, what else does Mr. Giuliani bring into the arena? I am curious to know why anyone would support Rudolph Giuliani.
Partisan? Hardly.
Bill Clinton and John Edwards? I reserve opinion on those 2 for another topic.
Democrat? Guess again.
The biggest crime Rudy committed after office was walking his cronie Rudy Washigton to the front of the line at the Workers Compensation Board. He left those of us who had been standing in line for 2+ yrs still online. He wont help us (9/11 Survivor Rescue and Recovery Workers).
That alone should be a signal to Americans. He only wants to be self serving.
