First Lady Takes a Trip to the Library

2007_05_elmotips.jpg

First Lady Laura Bush visited a school on the Lower East Side with Mayor Bloomberg and other city officials yesterday. The first lady, a former school librarian, announced a $1.3 million grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for school libraries across the country to update their book collections. Twenty-eight schools in the city will get grants up to $5,000, including the the Island School on East Houston. The Post reports that the Island School's head librarian Lewis Lhana, who conducts puppets shows, had one of the puppets "gentle dragon Qualia" tell Mayor Bloomberg he smelled "like a rocket ship."

Later in the evening, the first lady was honored for her commitment to literacy and education at the Fifth Annual Sesame Workshop Benefit Dinner. Her daughters attended with her, and the photo at top is a splendid "Suggest a caption" opportunity! And husband President Bush was in NJ for a state Republican party fund-raiser. The event raised almost $700,000 and also attracted protesters. Fun fact from the NY Times: Prominent NJ Republicans, such as Thomas Kean Jr. (who blamed his failed gubernatorial campaign on Bush) and former Governor and EPA secretary Christie Todd Whitman, were not there.

to hell with that mindless, souless c*nt. How can she show her shit-eating face in public?

god, i hate this whole fucking family.

it's so unbelievably lame that – in george bush's white, male, conservative, whackjob world – first lady's are only good for reading books to school children. get involved on any meaningful level and they brand you as power hungry.

You're right me. I'd much rather see her lay the groundwork for a national political career while first lady. She should pick a state, one with a lot of electoral votes, and make a run for senate. Then run a mechanical big-money campaign for prez playing on the cashe of her husbands name. Maybe push the primary dates up to three years before the election so only monied candidates with name recognition stand a snowballs chance in hell.

So much hatred. I think we need to dissolve political parties as we know them. Too many retards and hacks (see above). Maybe moving the capital to another city and making it hard for the lobbying firms to move with the government or making lobbying firms illegal. Or just start drafting a new covenant. maybe it's time for another constitutional convention.

I'd still still hit the bush twins.

Didn't Laura Bush launch the first National Book Festival? Wasn't she the first person other then the President to deliver a presidential address (2001)?

Dig Laura's kabuki make-up and whacked-out medicated affect. Dig the drunk tarts. All in all a very inspiring first family.
And gee, I know it's not polite to ask, but shouldn't those drunk tarts be dodging IEDs in Ramadi, fightin' their daddy's idiotic war?

Damn, that Elmo is one sharp dresser!

what a disgusting family. disgusting.

It looks like Jenna's dress is made from the pelts of Elmo's dead relatives. Maybe that's why Elmo can't look at her.

Bellevue residents are out in full force today.

Hey, isn't anyone going to mention this administrations policies toward public broadcasting system, national public broadcasting, and funding of shows like Sesame Street?

I'd have to guess that if he wasn't full of flame retardant batting Elmo would be pissed that he had to pose for that picture.

I hope your kids are healthy. Lots of bad stuff out there. You never know.

Little kids had to have their social security numbers cleared to be allowed near the First Lady in their own school?

I know they say kids are growing up fast these days, but to be a potential threat to national security before your voice changes?

Attention Jenna: not everyone can wear the currently fashionable trapeze dress. She looks like she's "expecting," in conservative parlance.

Just because you can afford to doesn't mean you should.

Is that just Elmo's hand that the Twin is pulling on? Might explain the look of cross-eyed growing ecstasy on his face.

The Washington Post had a great article this month about people that can't seperate party allegiance from reality. Whether it's giving credit when the opposition party does something right or attacking the President's family out of spite it shows that the person has a flaw in their reasoning abilities.

I hope those librarians use money from the Laura Bush Foundation to buy nothing but banned books.

Now that I've been thinking about his for a while, Elmo is usually nekkid, isn't he? Is this Elmo's first suit and tie?

Our little muppet is growing up.

Newsyspice likey Elmo.

I hope those librarians use money from the Laura Bush Foundation to buy nothing but banned books.

Banned books? I'd like to know where they are still banning books. If your high school in Kansas doesn't have "Catcher in the Rye" then you can get it from Amazon. If there is anything holding back books these days it is the huge New York based publishing companies and the Wall Street crowd pushing them to grow their quarterly earnings or else be bought up and dismantled by the private equity guys. Maybe you should focus on 21st century problems instead of living in the 1950s.

Attempts to ban books hasn't gone away, reality. From the American Library Association (ALA) website:

"The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) received a total of 546 challenges last year. A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school, requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness." They do mention that "Catcher in the Rye" dropped out of the top ten of most challenged books this year. While most book challenges are unsuccessful, the need for vigilance in fighting challenges has never gone away.

Laura: "Elmo? Does Mr. Cheney put his arm up your backside & make your lips move like he does with my husband?"
