READING: Just this morning she was sipping tea in the woods of Vermont - but tonight Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home, will be at Barnes & Noble on the UWS. Her book is a memoir, a graphic novel and all about growing up in a funeral home, with a closeted father. Tragicomic, indeed.
7pm // B&N [82nd & Broadway] // Free
EVENT: Ever since the UnCoolKids uncovered a ton of science events citywide, we've been keeping our eye on all of the clubs out there, hoping one day one would cover sharks. Tonight the Explorers Club combines sharks with asteroids (sounds dangerous!), in one lecture titled: "Asteroid Impact and the Extinction of Sharks: A Journey through the Geological Record," which will be led by Dr. John Chamberlain. If you checked out Jaws at Galapagos last night this may be right up your alley tonight. More details here.
6:30pm reception, 7pm lecture // 46 East 70th St // $20
THEATER: Great wonder and enchantment awaits down in DUMBO, where the capacious St. Ann’s Warehouse is putting on its annual Labapalooza!, A Mini-Festival of New Puppet Theater. Just because it's sponsored by The Jim Henson Foundation doesn't mean this is strictly kid stuff. Two distinct programs will alternate over the next five days, giving eleven different puppet-oriented shows a chance to push the envelope. One heavyweight in this year’s intriguing roster is Erik Sanko, who hypnotized us with The Fortune Teller last winter. He’s collaborating with The Kronos Quartet to present his newest oddity, Dear Mme: “a marionette play that takes place inside the torso of a writer who rewrites his own life story.” Another refreshing selection – of which there are many – is Milk, a “digital toy theater that explores the role of milk as it relates to the American Dream and themes from the Book of Genesis.” (Check the website for the full schedule; Program A is tonight.) - John Del Signore

MUSIC: Stars, who just somewhat-controversially put out a tribute album...to themselves, have got some side projects. Torquil Campbell's is a band called Memphis, and they will be taking the Joe's Pub stage tonight. Tomorrow night they're at Union Hall. Wonder if they'll cover Stars...
9:30pm // Joe's Pub [425 Lafayette St] // $15
