Warm Week Ahead

accuwx_0528.jpgWhy is Memorial Day often referred to as the "unofficial start of summer"? As far as we know there is no official start of summer. Astronomically, there's the summer solstice, and for bookkeeping reasons climatological summer is considered June, July and August, the three warmest months, but there's no official start to summer.

Whether official or not, the weather has certainly been summerlike this weekend. Today is no exception. We should have warm and humid weather until at least early this afternoon. A cold front stretching from the Catskills to central Pennsylvania will kick off a few showers, and possibly a thundershower as it approaches the city. Severe weather isn't expected, and Lightning Safety Awareness Week doesn't occur until next month, but you may want to take a sneak peak at lightning safety advice before heading outdoors today.

Today's high will be in the mid-80s. The cold front will only usher in slightly cooler, but much drier, air. Tomorrow's high will be in the upper-70s to around 80. Sunny and warm weather dominates Wednesday and Thursday before humidity, and a bit of clouds, returns on Friday. Highs for the rest of the week will be in the lower- to mid-80s.

Unofficial doesn't necessarily mean "as opposed to official." It most often means "there's no such thing as an official one."

Yes, Joe, there IS an offical start to Summer. The June 20/21st Summer Solstice IS the official start of the planetary season of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere on Earth, just as the Vernal Equinox on March 20/21st is the start of Spring.

Thank you Reader for posting the official start of Summer. Has Joe never looked at a Calendar?

I very well know what the solstice and equinox are, but they are not an official start of anything.
