Pencil This In
BBQ: Close out Popfest (and the long weekend) today with a BBQ at Union Pool. Served up with your burgers and beer are some bands, of course: The Orange Peels, Finish School, the Gazetteers, the Lil Hopsital, Surefire Broadcast and Titans of Filth.
1pm // Union Pool [484 Union Ave, Williamsburg] // $10
COMEDY: We're not afraid to admit that Over The Top may just be our favorite Sylvester Stallone movie. Well now that movie is being brought to stage: "Twenty years ago, director Menahem Golan and Sylvester Stallone had a dream. Their dream was to tear down the wall between arm-wrestling movies and truck-driving movies...a heartwarming father-son story...with countless pump-up montages, a Kenny Loggins theme song, and a man drinking motor oil."
Tonight's homage to the movie includes live arm wrestling, interviews with co-stars David Mendenhall (Michael Hawk) and Jimmy Keegan (Red-Headed Bully), and lots lots more. It's going to be...over the top! Be sure to stick around for Crash Test with Aziz, which follows the show!
8pm // UCB Theater [307 W 26th St] // $5
MUSIC: The National kicks off their five night, sold out run at Bowery Ballroom tonight. Didn't get tickets? Fear not, there's plenty of music around town. For a more intimate show check out the Jealous Girlfriends are at Zebulon. The band was named one of the L Magazine's Top 8 bands to watch this year, and opening up for them is Grand Mal.
Flying High.mp3 - Grand Mal
9pm // Zebulon [258 Wythe Ave, Williamsburg] // Free
If you want to end the weekend on a more mellow note, head over to the Carlyle for some jazz by Woody Allen and the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band. Yep, that Woody Allen. He'll be there next Monday, too, but note the hefty price tag!
8:45pm // Café Carlyle at The Carlyle [35 E 76th St] // $95!
