I hope this doesn't mark me as a weirdo, but last year, I would often spend sweltering Brooklyn summer afternoons in the new mausoleum at Green-Wood Cemetary. It was quiet, obviously, air conditioned, and the couches and chairs are extremely comfortable. It was a perfect quiet refuge to spend time reading and writing--and no one EVER bothers you there.

Delighted to hear that Woodlawn is making documents availale, though the Avery Library usually requires proof of academic bona fides before allowing anyone to see the documents in their possession.

As a professional tour guide, I know that Woodlawn imposes conditions for a group tour (but not for a handful of individuals) while its sister (and older) institution, Green-Wood in Brooklyn welcomes everyone who appears.

I love both cemeteries, but, absent other instructions, I take my clients to Green-Wood. Hey, you can salute liberty and Leonard Bernstein in almost the same gesture....
