Last Night's Action: Do Braves Have Mets' Number?

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg

  • Braves 2, Mets 1:John Smoltz got the better of his friend Tom Glavine and picked up his 200th win as the Mets lost the rubber game in Atlanta. Glavine didn't pitch poorly -- he gave up two runs in six innings -- but he didn't get any offensive support. Jose Reyes is 3 for his last 23, and without him to get things started, the Mets will struggle to score runs. This is the third straight series the Mets have lost to the Braves. New York leads Atlanta by 1 1/2 games in the standings, but the Mets don't want to revert to their pre-2006 ways of losing every big game to Atlanta. They go to Florida next and will welcome Orlando Hernandez back Friday.

  • Liberty 81, Mystics 76: This win gives the Liberty its best start (2-0) since 1999. The league opened in 1997. Shameka Christon and Erin Thorn led the way with 17 points each. The post-Becky Hammon era is off to a strong beginning.

  • Red Bulls 3, Fire 0: By the third minute, the Red Bulls were on pace to score 90 goals. They finished with three, but it was enough against the struggling Fire. Juan Pablo Angel had two of them for the Red Bulls, who are playing without Bruce Arena pet and captain Claudio Reyna. Much like the U.S. team, the Red Bulls don't seem to miss him.

Woo! Thanks for reporting on the Red Bulls! They're playing brilliantly this season so the more word that gets out to New Yorkers, the better.

Sad that Gothamist Sport is incredibly bias towards Yank..I mean baseball coverage all year round while all other teams/sports are secondary.
