Last Night's Action: Must-Win or Not, Yanks Win

  • Yankees 8, Red Sox 3: A loss would have dropped the Yankees 11 1/2 games back. Although they wouldn't have admitted it, losing two of three to Boston would have forced some early wild-card thoughts. Instead, the Yankees are within 9 1/2 games and have some life. For the second time this season, Andy Pettitte outperformed Curt Schilling, but Wednesday's game ended up better for the Yankees than did the one April 22, when the bullpen blew it. The list of teams that have come back from double-digit deficits to win divisions is short. Any talk of a righted ship for this Yankees team is premature -- they've played poorly enough that three wins in four games won't persuade anyone they're out of the funk. But this game became plenty more important in the Yankees' minds because they won.

In other Yankees news, their $39.95 million investment of the 2004-05 off-season, Carl Pavano, will get Tommy John surgery to reconstruct his elbow. Some say he wants to be back by August 2008, but the Yankees would be foolish to count on that or even hope for it. They'll be glad to close that chapter. Roger Clemens struggled with his control for Double-A Trenton, but he could make his next start with the big club.

  • Mets 3, Braves, 0: The Mets must be glad Oliver Perez can beat the Braves, because the rest of the team can't seem to do it. New York has beaten Atlanta three times this season, and Perez has earned the victory in each of those games. David Wright has four homers in his last four games, and the Mets made Thursday's John Smoltz-Tom Glavine matchup -- the third this season -- a rubber game.

it's still may believe it or not, and there are about 120 games to play - relax.

having never seen perez play before last week vs. the yamkees I wasn't aware of how big of a bush league douchebag homo he was. why does willie let him get away with that skipping off the hill shit?

The Yankees still suck. Riding high on taking two of three from the superior Red Sox, the Yankees will blow seven of their next ten.

Any other team in the MLB that is 9.5 games back is considered toast but not the Yankees. No! They must be freakin' superheros or something. Give it up, they're done.

I love it how the haters crawl out of their rocks like this.

It is May, everyone. Philip Hughes will be back here soon and Clemens will be as well. The bats are awake and the pitching is coming around. I am not worried and I will bet anyoe they win the division.

so long Carl...thanks for nothing. He cost $7.8 million per win...what a scam. But hey I'll take The Rocket and his million plus per start any day...welcome back Roger see you in June!!!
