There was an intense fire on the roof of 515 West 34th Street earlier. WNBC has pictures and says that the flames were "several hundred feet" in the air. WNBC was streaming footage of the fire, which looks like it was put out, but damn, it looked crazy. The 12-story building is apparently a commercial building (right by the West Side rail yards), and it looks like there was a smaller structure on top.
WABC also has pictures and says that the fire could be seen as far away as Brooklyn. There were injuries, though the FDNY didn't say how many.

Ahh, that explains the huge plume of smoke i saw from Penn Station.
Saw this from my office building. Looked pretty serious, but they managed to get it under control pretty quick.
That fire was pretty much across the street from my office. It was a scary scene when I left work today. Huge orange flames, firefighters on the roof.
Um, the building was, at best, 130-140 feet into the air (12-13 stories), so there was NO WAY the flames were shooting "several hundred feet in the air." Give me a break.
That's the building that the Coach design and corporate offices are in. Word is that everyone was evacuated safely and the flames never left the roof.
That was only a couple of blocks from our offices - we saw the frenzy as we were leaving.
Now the news is reporting that the a lit cigarette is suspected.
Damn hyperbole! HUGE FIRE MY ASS!
this was directly across the street from my office. when i was walking out, it looked pretty well managed; a bunch of firefighters were up on the roof. our entire office smelled like a camp fire. Coach has an office on the ground floor, so hopefully it doesn't disrupt the vital flow of leather business card holders.
