  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a double shooting at Belmont and Christopher Aves. in Brooklyn, a body was found on Otis Ave.on Staten Island, and there was a jumper up on the Brooklyn Bridge this afternoon.
  • The Gotham Book Mart is closing and having a going-out-of-business sale.
  • There's a new Subway Idol. American Idol is in America's hands now with a slight NYC vote for Staten Island-born Jordin Sparks necessitating our regional favor.
  • If one is dumb enough to write in for "apartment therapy", one is dumb enough to paint over exposed brick. We hope this couple's ouija board doesn't recommend installing wall-to-wall shag carpeting, because we will go over there and exorcise the place ourself.
  • Pictures of New Yorkers getting tattooed at last weekend's TattooCon.
  • Rosie O'Donnell was bilked out approximately $70,000 by someone passing stolen checks from her production company account. It was nearly a non-story until we read the culprit's Mom's reaction: '"He's a very good boy," Mitchell said. "This is out of character."'
  • A portion of the East Village was left waterless after a water main break flooded 2nd Ave. Do you live on 7th St. between 2nd and 3rd Aves.? Send us your pics!
  • The NY Post can only pray so hard: are Amy Fisher and Joey Buttafuoco back together as a couple? Shot-in-the-face-former-wife Mary Jo doesn't care and we applaud her indifference.

what do you mean?? white-painted exposed brick looks fantastic and really brightens up a room. . .

Flourescent and klieg lights also brighten up rooms, but they're bad decorating decisions. In the short term, painting dark brick with white, probably seems, and might practically be a good idea. 10 to 20 years from now, the person who is in your apartment will be stripping paint off brick or hardwood and thinking "What tacky motherfucker lived here?" Live for today. Decorate for posterity.

Dumb enough to ask for Apartment Therapy?

Thats an asshole statement to make, people go there to echange ideas and maybe even realize painting brick is wrong

Do I detect some Apartment Therapy jealousy?

yeah, dave - what's your AT beef? i agree that painting over the brick isn't the best idea but...sheesh. is this gawker all the sudden?

AT is a great site dude... not to mention the majority of the people that reply to her agree that her brick basically sucks. I wouldn't do it, but it's not my fireplace.

If you don't know what you're talking about, you should keep your snide remarks to yourself

Gotta agree with the commenters assessement of the anti-AT remark. First of all, that brick sucks mightily Second of all, I don't think you actually read the description of the brick, looked at the pictures of the brick, read the comments about the brick, and ultimately know that sometimes brick is nasty, as in this case. Thirdly, AT is a great site, and really, have you ever read comments about what some people think of Gothamist?

Anyhoo, I say paint that crap white cause the beautiful luster of brick left that fireplace in the early 20th century.

Painting brick is permanent. Take it from a guy that used to paint houses for a living: Don't be an idiot. Don't paint brick. Put a fire screen in front of it and glue a 30$ mantle to it. That way every person that lives there after you will not curse your idiocy.

If, however, you own the place. Have the yellowed shellac blasted off and have non-yellowing shellac applied by a professional. It is an expensive process, but you won't be the idiot that painted over a hundred year old fireplace.

Completely agree. "Dumb" should not have been employed in those lines and "AT" is a high quality site. I apologize. When I read about brick being painted white, however, I was seized with revulsion and temporarily lost my manners. I've actually seen it done nicely, so I guess rules are meant to be broken. Stay away from shag carpeting over hardwood floors though.

...we will go over there and exorcise the place ourself.

"Ourself" is not a word. "Our" is plural, so the only correct reflexive pronoun is "ourselves."
