Workin' Out In Williamsburg

2007_05_arts_averagejoes.jpgAfter hearing from concerned residents and noticing the problem ourselves, we've been following the Racked report on a lack of gyms in Williamsburg with interest.

There is the Metropolitan Pool and Fitness Center, located on Bedford and Metropolitan. According to the Voice, it offers: "two gym rooms and a three-lane, 25-yard pool." Racked also got an email informing them of a new gym which will be opening soon on the south side near Graham Avenue or somewhere in the McCarren Park vicinity.

According to Yelp, there's a Curves, some personal trainers...and Frenchie's Gymnasium (which apparently looks like this). Anyone else have any leads on Williamsburg gyms?

In about a year, we'll have NYSC. In about 2-3, probably an equinox. All depends of financial demographics.

  • Dude

Billyburg hipsters have got to stop complaining about the lack of pools when McCarren Pool (get it?) is being used for their degenerate and awful hipster music concerts. I am so happy that the city has decided to clean up the hipster filth and convert it back to what it should be, a pool!!

I'm not trying to insult anybody, but the more I read about W'burg, the more it sounds like a tremendous pain in the ass. No gyms? Slow train? Is it really that much cheaper to live out there?

  • ebd

No!!!! Why Gothamist have you forsaken me? Don't advertise the metro pool! It's crowded enough as it is and we don't need anymore yupsters trying to play it poor in our municipal candy-land.

  • ManStar

Metropolitan Pool is 75 bucks for a year. It can get crowded after work, when I usually go, but its still a lot better deal than anywhere else. And it's a fairly central location. I don't understand paying hundreds of dollars a year, much less a month, to do the same thing you would do at Met Pool. Please explain.

  • Dude

#22 - Why don't you and your repulsive hipster horde get over yourselves! Billyburg is a total hipster town and you know it, jackass!

  • aam

greenpoint Y is great--and very cheap! it's nearly in williamsburg.

  • me

Maxim on Driggs looks really nice. Took a tour once, but never joined cause I moved.

  • Get Over Yourselves

Wow, it's amazing how people will read whatever they want in these posts. Nowhere in the original post is the word "hipster" written; yet people see the word "Williamsburg" and assume that's what it's referring to. There just might be people in Williamsburg who are not hipsters and for whom this information would be interesting. I don't understand carrying around a massive chip on your shoulder for "hipsters." Don't you have anything else to worry about?

Exodus (the gym you speak of) closed around Christmas. It was such a dump anyway.

I go to Absolute Power now and it sucks too.

Not all of us Williamsburgians are naturally skinny or coke addict hipsters (or rich people who own condos).

Is it too much to ask that there be a reasonably nice, CLEAN, non-meat-head gym in the neighborhood?

Maxim is alright, but it's too far for us Lorimer/Graham people.

With all the gentrification (like it or not) I would've thought people would be clamoring to build new gyms, grocery stores, etc. in the 'burg.

Absolute Power on Grand Street is pretty decent. OTOM in greenpoint is very good for all levels up to badass. The other gyms in the area are pussy.

Yet another non-news story from Jen Carlson. Madame Editor, could you please exercise a little more control over this contributor?

  • disgusted

i have to echo the sentiments of #6.

not only are stinky/sweaty men disgusting to work out around, they seriously need to keep their hormones in check and act like decent human beings. we really don't appreciate the men who stand outside classes critiquing our various body parts like we can't hear or see them.

sure, the attention is motivating, but act like a grown up and stop being so obvious.

  • bim

    i agree with dude,

enough with the hipster articles. stop kissing their asses already.

  • Blair

What about that gym on Metropolitan a block from the G/L stop?

  • um

cm, I have to use the Greenpoint Y after 10:30pm, and now you have pushed my time slot back yet another hour. it's just TOO crowded.

  • Dude

Another hipster posting? First the L-train now the lack of gym in Billyburg, Gothamist is going hipster crazy today.

As for the new gym all it needs are a bunch of 5 lbs weights and some yoga mats, that should be enough for their soy-fed, rail thin frames.

  • lancedance

Who needs the gym? I heard that no muscle tone was the new black.

  • Jay Dee

Yeah its called Absolute Fitness (below the pool hall). Its fun to spot the crack-heads turned meat heads pumping up in there... but with most recent occurrences in Bushwick, whitey will push them out...

  • Kojak

matukonyc, you must be a lesbian.

  • jjpaterson

if you want a gym go to manhattan, or better yet move back to ohio

  • matukonyc

jvm: Do you know anything about women? Why on earth would we care if you wanted to open an all-male gym?

Men (especially scantily-clad, perspiring ones) are disgusting and every woman joins an all-women gym to avoid them.

Plus, haven't you heard of David Barton?

  • or you can opt to run on the street without the help of a machine... yoiu can also use a floor mat for crunches and other workouts.

  • cm

The Greenpoint YMCA is great. Not exactly in Williamsburg...but close enough. On Meserole and Lorimer. Its cheap, it has a small pool, the weight room is sufficient, lots of classes, and the equipment room has just gotten new equipment. Its crowded during peak times, but everyone is fairly orderly and observant of the 30 minute limit.

  • jvm

One day someone will have to sit down and explain to me how there can be all-female gyms, such as Curves and Lucille Roberts, but if someone tried to open up an all-male gym women all over the place would be suing and demanding their right to join.

    I'm just saying.

  • T

On North 9th and Driggs, there's a decent sized place. I think it's called Maxim fitniess.

  • Phyl

There's a gym on Grand Street between Graham and Humboldt. Don't know the name, but it's below a pool hall on the south side of the street.
