Rudy Brings His Campaign to Letterman

Last night, Rudy Giuliani appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. It took about 2 minutes for Rudy to invoke September 11. Until someone uploads the whole segment on YouTube, we've only got Giuliani's thoughts on Iraq, which prompted applause from the audience. And made us wonder how many Late Show attendees are out of towners. Anyway, it was a very welcoming stage for Giuliani (as it is with many candidates on the campaign trail), as Letterman basically let Giuliani give a stump speech. Here's the AP's transcript of Giuliani's thoughts on rising gas prices:

The situation in the Middle East has something to do with it, the fact that we don't have enough refineries has something to do with it," said Guiliani. "There's sort of a bottleneck that occurs – even if we find more oil, it's going to be tough to get it to where it needs to go because we haven't built a refinery in 20, 25 years, 30 years."

"It's because we haven't pursued energy independence – maybe a better way to describe it, energy diversity," he continued. "We haven't pursued ethanol the way we should, we haven't licensed a new nuclear power plant in 30 years, France is 80 percent nuclear power, we haven't done a new one in 30 years, licensed a new one in 30 years. China's going to build 40 nuclear power plants. We haven't licensed one in 30 years."

"All those things probably combine to put us in a situation where not only the price of gasoline is high, but money has to go to our enemies," said Guiliani. "It [oil] used to always be a problem for our economy, going back to Jimmy Carter and even Richard Nixon. But now, it's a problem of national security."

"One of the things I'd commit myself to doing is to achieve energy diversity, or, let's call it – as much energy independence as we can," he said. "And we've gotta do it over the next ten years, like we put a man on the moon."

And when Letterman asked whether Giuliani thinks about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton before falling asleep, "That is not my last thought before I go to sleep at night. It could be, it could be Sen. Clinton, it could be Sen. Obama, it could be Sen. Edwards, or, who knows, it could be former Vice President Gore. Who knows?"

What we found Giuliani's body language interesting: He seemed uncomfortable and cramped, almost hunched to be closer to Letterman. If you watch this clip of Obama on Letterman, Obama is leaning back in his chair, rather relaxed. Just an observation about the differing styles of the candidates.

that's not "body language" in the sense that giuliani is feeling cramped or nervous or hiding something during the interview. that's just how he holds himself, all the time. if you ever see him in out in the open in person you'll notice...he looks almost like an alien or something. regardless i think he's a good candidate

Wow, I didn't realize nuclear energy was even on the table anymore.

I also can't believe he isn't waging war on oil dependence, but every one of his comments make one thing clear:

Giuliani is deeply, deeply entrenched in the military industrial complex.

More Giuliani play on words...

even if we find more oil, it's going to be tough to get it to where it needs to go because we haven't built a refinery in 20, 25 years, 30 years.

Just because a new refinery has been built doesn't mean they haven't increased capacity at the existing ones. They all have expanded or are expanding.

I would say the audience is almost exclusively all out of towners and probably racists.
there, I said it. and overweight while I'm piling it on.

And Entergy, owner of several nuclear plants including Indian Point, is one of his clients. Just as Bush and Cheney, oil men, advanced oil interests at the expense of all else, so Giuliani will attempt to advance nuclear power. Funny that he doesn't seem to have anything to say about recent security and operation failures at Indian Point.

The audience members of the Letterman show are usually the same mid-western, right winged, non-tipping types that one might wait on say if the worked in a corporate times square themed restaurant. Dont worry Im not bitter.

Wow, took him two minutes? This must be part of his new de-emphazie the eleventh move.

Wonder how much Letterman had to fork over to get Rudy to talk about his capital-H Heroism.

Bush is the one driving up the oil prices.

You're right, it would certainly be better for candidates to prove themselves awesome by ignoring the biggest loss of civilian life in American history.

I mean, shit, if you ignore it, it certainly won't happen again, right?

9/11 wasn't the biggest loss of civilian life in American history. In one day, yes, but over the course of WW2, there were about 11,000 civilian deaths. The American Civil War killed about 500,000 civilians.

Rudy is a whore. It's one thing to evoke 9/11 within the context of a discussion of current events, it's another to MAKE MONEY off it, and use the deaths of those people to propel yourself into the political limelight for your own personal gain, which is what he is doing shamelessly.

Why do we New Yorkers always spew such venom about people from out of town? Especially when most of us are from out of town, ourselves? I'd hazard a guess, but most of the people who read this very blog are probably Brooklyn-living hipsters who come from places like Peoria and Scranton and Omaha.

Anyway, Rudy's the best man for the job!

#12, you make a very weak, tired point. Marlon Brando, Liza Minelli, Bill Murray, Andy Warhol, Spalding Gray, Jason Alexander, and Frank Sinatra were *all* from out of town. Self-loathing is a bitch.

attention everyone!!!!! read this quote from the article...

"...which prompted applause from the audience"

now,
there are "applause" signs all over the letterman studio. they light the sign all the time. i guarantee you the audience wasn't prompted by rudy. they were promted by the person hitting the applause button.

Oh please. And the rest of them are running for president for the betterment of the country?

No one's that naive

Jen Chung...sounds like some kind of 80s dance or a Bruce Lee tenet of Jeet Kune Do...at any rate, your post makes no sense and does not pass the smell test of senseless bias.

Being that you are Chinese, I am surprised that you even understand the mechamism of an election OR candidate.

F-ing chinks.

Whatever you think of him, Rudy is dead on about nuclear power. If France, Germany, and Japan - some of the least polluted countries in the world - can make it work, there's no reason we can't.
