We read the headline "5 New Yorkers detained in Disney World brawl" and thought, "Uh oh." Then it turned out that the five people were from Long Island! (Shirley, NY, to be exact.)
Authorities told the AP that five people, ranging from 14 to 20 years old, were spitting and swearing at Walt Disney World patrons and were detained on Sunday after causing a scene around Space Mountain. Then the group got into a fight with the deputy, who said, "I was punched in the face with closed fists several times by all the defendants. I defended myself by throwing counter punches in their faces and bodies in an attempt to break free." It wasn't until he used a stun gun on a 17-year-old girl who had punched a security guard that "everyone came under control."

LI certainly has white trash and guidos, and is no paradise overall, but is it really any worse than whatever 3rd rate, shit midwest/southern/west coast suburb you come from? I doubt it, and at least it's close to the ocean, mountains, AND New York City.

The LI people looked down on me, but thats cool. Five years later, I've got a good job in the city and a nice apt/life in bklyn. They are still living in their mom's basement, doing coke, and fighting with other jackasses at some meatpacking horror-show. Time wounds all heels.

There are assholes everywhere, usually any time you get five people together one of them will turn AH at the slightest provocation. But here's the thing, it seems that nowhere are they more proud of their assholedness than on the Guyland.
I can remember a Times article from some years back describing, in the wake of Joey Buottofucco/Amy Fischer mess (google if necessary) the life of ennui on the Guyland. It opened with a story of two cops on patrol in a park in Nassau and coming across some graffiti on a boulder. One cop turns to the other and says, "Damn Kids."
The boulder read "SATIN LIVES."

Being from Westchester, I can definitely say that folks from Long Island are low lifes. The Island consistently votes Republivan. Why? Because they just don't give a sh*t about anything but themselves. It's like having a 100 mile long stip of middle America just off NYC. At least most people from upstate are educated and have some class.

Nothing kills the eardrums like the Long Island accent. It's worse than the Southern drawl, the crap you hear in Boston, and even the South Jersey twang.
I grew up on Long Island, detest the "culture" there and was overjoyed when I moved away from people who were outraged that I should find anything less than exalting about the crushingly conformist void that exists there as a poor substitute for legitimate culture. After enduring the staggeringly insipid actions, words and attitudes of countless jackasses and goons from Long Island, I witnessed a few cringe-worthy displays of foul mouthed histrionics, littering, shoving and bullying while in Disneyworld traveling with others. The rudest, most thoughtless, boorish, pushy, loud, obnoxious individuals at Disney that day alone were from Long Island(I listened to them refer to Long Island landmarks and use indigenous slang - the Long Island whine) and those incidents inspired me to subtly inquire about difficult tourists wherever I have traveled since. I almost always get a somewhat diplomatically sheepish reply about "some people" from Long Island as the most trouble, most unpleasant, antisocial and or atrocious people anywhere, so whatever is instilled in the distasteful Long Islanders, it stays behind them as a reminder to the civilized folks elsewhere. The rest of the country has to deal with meth addicts wasting their lives, Long Island has arrogant bellicose jerks with ludicrously high and equally unfounded opinions of themselves.

I know these biased comments are typical of any Gothamist debate, but this one hurts me. I'm from eastern Long Island, actually a nice small town by the beach. People from the East End are really laid-back; in fact, I'd never heard the term "JAP" until I went to college upstate.
In high school, I dated a guy from Shirley, and there definitely are a lot of douchebags there, but there are douchebags everywhere. I dare anyone to flip through their yearbook and not spot a douchebag. It's just part of life, and you have to live hoping that the douchebags from your home town/area won't make fools of themselves.

I am sick to my stomach over the generalization of these comments about people from LI. I am from a very nice town on the island and yes, there are some uneducated jerks, but the majority are polite, go to college and teach their kids respect.
I worked at a Long Island beach over the summer when I was in high school, and let me tell you...I got the majority of attitude, rudeness and low class behavior from the idiots from Queens and Brooklyn who tried coming in on the weekends even though large signs everywhere said it was a beach for town residents only. They apparently thought they were better than everyone else and the rules didn't apply to them. When I politely explained to them it was for town taxpayers only and of course if they were from New York I could direct them to a state beach they could go to, I got called all sorts of names. Yes, and Long Islanders are trash : P
