^The flip side to that, of course, is that there are many loving, friendly pit bulls that don't make the same headlines as the bad apples. So the breed gets stereotyped as inherently "gentle" or "vicious," and people respond accordingly. On another note, that headline is priceless.

Labs may seem harmless, however, i was viciously mauled by a yellow lab many years back. i was very badly injured, and had i not known what to do I would probably be dead. Any breed can inherit the bad traits of its father.

the key here is to make sure you know your breeder/who you're buying from! references and a reputation are priceless. and i would say the same about any shelter.
