SNL Ends Season With A...Braff

We sort of slept through this season of Saturday Night Live. Sure it had its moments, but the show still isn't what it used to be (even Rainn Wilson couldn't revive it for a night). The best thing to happen in recent years has been Andy Samberg and the Digital Shorts (what did you think of last nights? Watch it here). These broke out in 2005 with Lazy Sunday, and kept going strong in 2006 (see: Dick in a Box).

Last night the season finale was hosted by Zach Braff (with musical guest Maroon 5). Guess what, Braff is still talking about New Jersey! From his monologue (which you can watch below): "Here's some things you may not know about the greatest state in the world: of all the Governors of all the states, our Governor drives the fastest. 91 MPH!"

Watch more clips from the finale here, though none of them are as good as Celebrity Jeopardy with Sean Connery.

What did you think of this season?

i think ever since the second season began airing, people have been complaining about the show not being "the way it used to be"

i think this season has had a couple great episodes..im really excited to see bill hader come into his own and get darrell hammond fired. seth & amy are great on weekend update. fred armisen and maya rudolph have been killing it.

for every 1 great "jeopardy" sketch from the late 90's/early 00's, there were 10 horrible sketches involving jimmy fallon and horatio sans cracking up...the show wasn't that great "back then"

last nite's episode was horrible. Zach braff was sleepwalking. It looked like he was reading cue cards all night which he probably was. His whole garden state as being the anthem for successful but hollow 30 somethings is tired. I can't believe that the best shows were the scarlett johanssen and justim timberlake ones. unfrickingbelievable. Just watch acceptable.tv on the net. it goes down easier and they are only 5 minutes long. "WHO'S GONNA TRAIN ME! I GOT A FIGHT COMING UP!"

Time to bring in Alec Baldwin to host a few.
never saw Garden State but watched Glengarry glen ross dozens of times.

i thought it seemed telling that nearly every skit dealt with Zach Braff as a celebrity personality. he barely took on any other character, and everything seemed to be about him, how famous he is, and how people treat him since he's famous. weak.

Amy Poehler MUST GO! She's truly horrible. Other than that, the year was pretty meh, but the cast is really good, and just a touch of weird.

Mits, how can you not like Amy Poehler? She's consistently a strong player--when she's performing, she's on fire! I do feel, however, her talent can be used better than on Weekend Update, which has become one of the most boring parts of the show, especially in contrast to the daily show and colbert. Generally good one liners on Weekend Update, but my lord does that segment play it safe.

1)amy p is suffering from overexposure on SNL, they simply put her in to many skits (party because she was immediately one of the best cast members upon arrival).

2) Braff has not proven to be anything but a one dimensional actor

3) is there anything more base, boring and telling of ones personality then "clever" little digs at Jersey? Jersey jokes are just shattering the unintentional comedy scale these days (meaning you laugh at, not with the joke teller).

M, I agree with you in general, but in Braff's case, he is evidently from NJ.

Much in the same way that I don't mind if a fellow American takes a shot at this country, but don't like it so much when I hear the same criticism from a European.

I think the writing is weirder and better this season than it's been in years and the cast is a stronger, more talented and more lively bunch than have been on the show in a while, especially, Hader, Sudeikis, Samberg, Forte, Rudolph & Wiig.
Especially Hader and Wiig.
Especially Wiig.
*Sigh*

SNL always works best for me when the writing is clever, and one of the ways to tell when the writing is no longer clever is when they resort to bodily function humor.

The first instance of this was way back in the day with Dan Akyroyd's Julia Child cutting her finger and spraying blood everywhere. Once projectile vomit enters an SNL sketch, as it has a few times this year, including this past weekend during the Italian interview show sketch, it's a clue that the writing staff is tapped out and it's time to change gears.

Oh, and I agree with the posters who point out that Zach Braff played Zach Braff all night. The only time he didn't was when he was the lame Eminem impersonator on the MTV4 sketch, and that just wasn't funny.

Take the summer to re-tool, Lorne. Please!

One of the ways you can tell when someone really needs attention is when they post the same comment THREE TIMES ... Dan Cooper!
