Last Night's Action: Mets Take Game One

  • Mets 3 Yankees 2: Willie Randolph deserves the game ball in this one as he allowed Endy Chavez to swing away on a 1-0 count and Chavez hit the game-winning home run. No one in the stadium thought Chavez was going to do anything but bunt with a runner on first, and when Andy Pettitte grooved one, Chavez responded.

Chavez’s home run wiped out a 2-1 Yankee lead, which they had taken on a home run from Hideki Matsui. Apart from Matsui, the bats continued their cold streak managing only six hits against Oliver Perez and two relievers. Bobby Abreu continued his pathetic hitting, looking lost in a pinch-hitting appearance in the eighth.

The win extends the Mets lead in NL East because Atlanta was rained out while the Yankees fall ten games behind Boston. With two rookies starting the remaining of the series, is it officially panic time in the Bronx?

  • Cleveland 88 Nets 72: New Jersey made their run in the third quarter, but appeared to use up their energy as the fourth quarter belonged to Cleveland. The Cavaliers take the series 4-2 and will now face Detroit for a spot in the finals.
