Urban nightmare come true: A woman fell 10-12 feet through sidewalk grating outside 150 West 51st Street. And she fell into an electrical transformer vault! Luckily, she was not electrocuted (according to NY1, Con Ed said she was "never in danger of being electrocuted"), but the power was shut off as a precaution. One person told WCBS 2, “I was walking in front of her and all of a sudden I heard somebody yelling, somebody fell, and I turned around and there was a hole in the ground. That’s when I ran over, saw it and ran to my job and called 911.”
It took 20 minutes for the FDNY to rescue the woman, who is at a hospital in stable condition. Naturally, this has scared the bejesus out of, well, anyone who walks on a sidewalk. It seems that the hinges might have given way, but Con Ed is investigating.
Many women avoid walking on sidewalk grates because their shoes' heels get caught. And this is OSHA's bulletin Hazard of Potential Sidewalk Grate System Failure.

yikes! definitely one of my biggest fears.
one of my friends refuses to ever walk on sidewalk grates. he'll cross the street if he has to. I, however, have balls of STEEL.
I feel for this woman, her story aside .... whenever I see a woman get her unecessarily large and totally unpracticle heels caught in a sidewalk grate I laugh. There's your slave to insecurities right there honey.
It would have been really funny to be the person behind her minding your own business when someone just - boom - drops through the sidewalk right in front of you.
I of course would have helped and held in my laughter until I got to the bar and told all my friends.
Now I imagine she'll sue and be able to retire and never really have to walk anywhere again.
Yeah, I'd do that for a Klondike Bar.
klk - right there with you, but I find myself stepping on grates and gates all the time. Matter of fact, it was just a month or so ago I was absentmindedly stepping toward a gate when I sort of felt it move up from under me, then suddenly slam down with a metal thwack back to being level with the pavement. An anguished, "ouch" came out from under the basement gate and I hightailed it the hell out of there. Been watching my step since - now even more so.
she just became a multi-millionaire
ANOTHER example of Con Ed competence!
Can we please hang Burke publically?
You know what happens next...
They are going to cover all the grates in SHELLAC!!
what a classic New York frightmare.
Last time I slipped and fell on a grate in the the rain and twisted my ankle and knee. I will be avoiding grates like the plague from now on as well.
"CA-Ching" She'll never have to work another day in her life !!!!!
Damn it!! I've been walking on grates for years hoping I'd fall in! I've always seen it as the easiest paycheck with the least likeness of injury. SHIT this woman and her luck! I hope she appreciates this!
