Yesterday's thunderstorm left its mark around the area. Just under 2,000 homes were without power in the five boroughs (though, given Con Ed's counting, that could be many times more) while thousands of homes in Westchester, New Jersey and Connecticut were also powerless. About an inch of rain fell in Central Park.
The winds were fierce: According to AccuWeather, the winds were "just short of hurricane force," and the Post reports winds were at 70 MPH in Brooklyn Heights and 72 MPH in Bayonne, NJ. (People in Brooklyn even thought a tornado had arrived.) Scaffolding and some buildings under construction were victims of the gusts. And some readers said that sand (perhaps from construction sites?) hit their faces so hard it felt like a microdemabrasion.
Con Ed is urging customers not to approach or touch downed power lines. If you want to report a power outage to Con Ed, call 800-75-Con-Ed or go to the website. And it's going to be a lot cooler today: Highs around 65 degrees, with a chance of light rain later this afternoon.
