Pipe From Deutsche Bank Crashes into Firehouse

Critics of the Deutsche Bank demolition probably never quite anticipated this: A 15 foot steel pipe being dismantled from the building fell from the 35th floor and into the neighboring firehouse.

The Daily News reports that two firefighters at Engine 10 Ladder 10 were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. A subcontractor had been removing a sprinkler pipe when it somehow came loose and fell through the roof into the firehouse's exercise room. The News included this bit: "The subcontactor, John Galt, has had little experience bringing down large office towers in urban settings." Well, that's great, given that the building is 40 stories.

Work has been suspended as an investigation is taking place. Dismantling of the Deutsche Bank building at 130 Liberty Street began late last year, even though some local EPA officials were concerned that World Trade Center dust might still escape.

If Howard Roark were real he would have nothing to do with the WTC. He wouldn't want his designs modified by committee. In fact, he would probably live in China where he could design skyscrapers for Shanghai's skyline and not be bled to death by 100,000 critics.
