Hot Sake - Food News You Can Use

  • Mouthfuls fires up the Mutton chop thread. Was lively the first time around with the spirited debate over the definitions of different lamb slaughter ages and names, we'll just drop you in now with the mostly pure adulation for the the chop and it's value - $38.50 for what sounds like 1.5 pounds. If you go it seems like a share plate or sandwiches the next day are in your future.
  • A useful nugget on Korean from the Thrillist vault.
  • An interesting experiment is unfolding with the theme of “Eating Organic on a Food Stamp Budget”. Now into week two there are accompanying photos and some interesting insights. (via Megnut)
  • Quick, Well-Flavored Recap of the Week in Eating:
    - Burger that lives up to its reputation at Nice Matin, perfect MR closer to R with a unique onion / comté cheese / aioli topping. Good work done here.
    - The Bar Room at The Modern is one fantastic place, not cheap but fantastic. Quite difficult to think of a better dish recently than the Slow Poached Farm Egg “In a Jar” with Lobster, Asparagus and Uni Foam. Wine selections we stellar, and a reasonably priced white 1990 Vouvray stole the show. Smith & Vine in Carol Gardens has it at retail.
    - Eel tasting at Yasuda, if you call yourself a sushi fan and have not been here just call the whole game off. Four pieces, 2 fresh water and 2 from the sea, each done with its own glaze are a highlight, but be sure to ask what's seasonal tonight.
  • In more feel good food news, we may finally be getting to the point where overfishing is tough to recover from for some species. Thankfully the government is right on top of it, 5+ years later just getting the findings out of a committee. Whew...now they only need to agree to act, draft legislation, get the President to sign onto something that makes even less people like him and enforce it.

  • AHT has some news of a very promising hamburger opening, seems odd that they are endorsing a place that serves well-done as a company policy. Strangely this actually seems to drive interest in trying it out.
  • Regina Schrambling is a must visit at this time. The site (sans permalinks) is reading nicely with posts about Bush serving the Queen a foolish menu, an ode to falling in love with the a Mexican chefs' love of corn and it end products, a Whole Foods Bowery rant and yet another attack on the Times.

In the foodie blog section in the first half of the magazine, along with foodporn.com as a good resource for recipes, I tried to find the story on line ,but it’s not on the bonappetit website….

Better run to the nearest newsstand at lunch...

It's the May issue

Schrambling wasn't referring to the Bowery Whole Foods. She lives on the UWS.

"an ode to falling in love with the a Mexican chefs' love of corn and it end products"

Is that English?

>>>seems odd that they are endorsing a place that serves well-done as a company policy.

I eat beef well done...
