Giuliani's Not-So-Secret Political Liability

giuliani2.jpg

The dust-up over Rudy Giuliani's waffling over abortion is small political beans in comparison to a liability he cannot possibly shrug off. Rudy Giuliani is an unapologetic Yankees fan, and people outside of NYC (and some within the confines of the city) HATE the Yankees. With a passion. There's a fabled Broadway musical called "Damn Yankees!" and it's not about Paul Revere or George Washington. To the hometown fan and natural supporter, Giuliani's support for the Yankees (and he appeared at the Mets home re-opener following 9/11, which preceded the Yanks') seems like a no-brainer and genuine. Other policiticans from parts farther afield have donned Yankees caps and looked ridiculous.

But Giuliani is no longer stumping in the Bronx, and his Yankees boosterism is proving to be a liability. The former mayor's been in Texas this week, where the term Yankee is more of a dig than an identification. In Houston, former Mayor Giuliani made the mistake of pointing towards a baby in the audience of his Houston Baptist University address. He admired the child's I ♥ NY t-shirt, but added that it could also use a Yankees cap. Given that the Yankees had just pirated away their hometown boy, Roger Clemens, that may have seemed like something Giuliani would want to keep under his own cap, at least until he left town. The audience in Houston was otherwise receptive to Giuliani, but booed vociferously at the mention of the Bronx Bombers.

I'm a lifelong Red Sox fan who hates the Yankees.
That Giuliani roots for the Yankees doesn't bother me in the least.
Quite the contrary, I like his baseball passion.

Don't forget the four diamond-encrusted World Series Rings that the Yankees gave Giuliani as a gift. A gift which, of course, had nothing to do with the stadium he tried to get the taxpayers of New York to build for the Yanks (Bloomy nixed the deal as soon as he came into office).

Giuliani is a crook.

this shyster doesn't have a chance in hell

why should any person care what sports team a politician follows? it's so idiotic. i could care less if the candidate i follow doesn't support my fave teams or his local teams. it means nothing!

That's a legit question bim, and a good observation. Unfortunately politics and sports have never been accused of being idiocy-free zones, especially in NY. Witness the outcry over Illinois native Hillary Clinton claiming Yankee fan-status when running for Senator. And Mayor Bloomberg caught major heat when seen wearing red socks while Boston was in the Bronx to play the Yankees (get it? Red Sox/Socks). And now Giuliani is booed by an otherwise friendly audience for commenting on an infant's outfit. It's a strange world; we're just writing it down.

...and spelling it incorrectly.

Bada bing.

We prefer "Zing!" ourselves, but point taken [6].

Let's face it, the place where being a Yankee fan is most likely to hurt Giuliani is in Massachusetts, where Red Sox fans hate everything having to do with the New York Yankees, right down to that opera guy who sings at all the big games in Yankee Stadium. But alas, Guiliani and the Republican party have already lost the battle in MA before the first shot has been fired. My advice to Guiliani: save your efforts in MA, and work on taming your Yankee rhetoric in smaller markets that have lived more immediately in the shadow of the evil empire, like Baltimore or Tampa Bay.

Yet another reason not to vote for him.

The Yankees represent all that is wrong with America. I'd never support a candidate who is a fan of the Yankees and their tactics, like balancing the budget or reducing the deficit would be a priority - NOT!
