We’re Not Related, So it’s OK to Love You.

First off, let us set the record straight. Gotham Bar and Grill and Gothamist are not related. We do not share any parent holding company and there is no sordid history to tell of. The experience that we are about to share is an unbiased tale of a wine geek, just trying to find a quality glass of wine and a comfy stool at the bar.

After last weeks research on great happy hour deals we needed a little reprieve from margaritas, beer and mixed well drinks. All we wanted was a glass of wine to be slowly sipped and enjoyed. Just one glass -- we’re trying to make nice with our liver. But the challenge we face is it’s often hard to find exciting wines that are offered by the glass. Although, we are happy to say that this is changing. In fact, Gotham Bar and Grill’s selection has reaffirmed our faith.

Perhaps it was lucky timing, but when we popped into Gotham at around 6pm on a Tuesday, we had no trouble finding a seat at the bar. We pulled up a stool that was dangerously close to the bowl of salted mixed nuts, chock full of those big toasted walnuts that are always the first to go. We perused the list as we brought the bowl of nuts a little closer: 3 sparkling wines, 5 whites and 6 red wines – all unique and delicious. Some of the highlights were the Guy Charlemagne, Rose Brut ($19.50), Scholium Project Verdelho “Naucratis” ($14), Melville Pinot Noir “Verna’s” ($15) and the Cune Rioja Crianza “Vina Real” ($12).

We ended up going with the Scholium Project Verdelho, which had layers of citrus, floral and grassy notes. It reminded us of a blend between Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. It was exactly what we were looking for and even though the alcohol is a little high, there is so much going on in the wine you almost don’t notice. Plus, it goes ridiculously well with those salted nuts.

And in the spirit of full disclosure, we didn’t have just one.
