Giuliani Tries to Gain Support For His Abortion Stance

2007_05_giuliani6.jpgAs rival Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney continues to gain ground, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani is still leading in national surveys. However, Giuliani has been facing criticism over his abortion stance, which has most recently been refined as something like I believe that women should have a choice, though I'm morally against abortion.

And with that, he's trying to convince the conservative voters out there that he's a good choice. He gave this opinion at Houston Baptist university, where one poli sci major said, "Overall, I thought it was a great speech. I think it was a good political stance to take. He's sitting right in the middle," but then admitted he wouldn't vote for Giuliani because he's anti-abortion. Of course, given that Giuliani donated to Planned Parenthood in the 1990s, the conservatives are having a field day with him.

Pope Benedict has said that any candidate who is pro-choice should be excommunicated from the church. That gave the Daily News reason to survey a few Roman Catholic priests to see if they'd give Giuliani Communion - and they said they wouldn't!

The Daily News also spoke to two seniors: One said, "I love Giuliani, but that's what's holding me back on him. I don't like to see all those little babies die," while the another said, "I don't support abortion but I'd vote for Giuliani tomorrow morning - twice or three times, if I could."

And Giuliani also told Houston Baptist that he's okay with gay civil unions, but not gay marriage.

why are the poll choices always so biased

I'm no fan of the guy, but I'll give credit where it's due. I applaud the fact that he has the balls to stick to his opinion whereas other so-called "moderate" Repblicans pussy out on this issue.

The few people quoted in the article are irrelevent. That Giuliani is trouncing McCain in nationwide polls is what's important - at least this week. Primaries are a long way off.

I don't understand pro-life people. Obviously, it's only pro-life on white babies. If it were black baby abortions they'd be like "go ahead".

This is in some respects the opposite and the exact same as Mario Cuomo and the death penalty. Both pols have/had hot-button issues before them. Giuliani says he's personally against abortion but doesn't think that it's his role as a politician to let his personal views rule over what everyone else wants. Cuomo was against the death penalty and felt that it was his duty to let his conscience dictate a policy for all of New York. What's similar is that both men stuck by their principles, making well reasoned and eloquent cases for their positions. That level of honesty doomed Cuomo from ever having a shot at the Presidency. We'll see if it does the same for Giuliani.

If Giulliani is nominated I am out of here. Dustin' off my passport. (But where to go? The moon?) And its not because of his fake "position" of abortion. I always felt that as mayor, he lived up to his practice as prosecutor (law enforcement, not jurisprudence). What exactly does he represent in any measure of intelligent statesmanship? If you thought Bush was the final travesty of presidential politics, you ain't seen nothin' yet if Giulliani gets elected. Thank god the heartland will never elect a "Catholic Italian"; although I think Cuomo would have been very much better.

whether or not he gets the most votes, giuliani will be "elected" the next president.

This has been such a tiresome rant now for almost seven years. Frankly, I wish you whiners would just leave already. But as you say, where are you going to go? If you go to Europe who are you going to complain to about all of the surveillance? They monitor their people more than even the Patriot Act allows here and they have been doing for decades. Funny how your type never takes this into consideration.

we need to get your rid of people like your ass!! Then America will live up to it's real potential.

I was thinking the same thing about you. All you guys do is complain. You don't contribute any solutions. For instance, you don't even have a clue as to what my political beliefs are. You're making a knee-jerk assumption and telling me to leave. You really make yourself look foolish.

Dear [8]
who's assuming what about who? I am not a "type" or a "whinner". I just don't like the guy's politics. I don't like what he did as mayor, I don't consider him a hero; and my "I'm out of here" metaphor is just a manner of speaking. We are not at war with each other. Its just my opinion. The "your type of people" argument is disrespectful, un-American and reflects a shallow sense of politics.

Wow, those are some biased poll choices. Three of the four choices are negative.

Giuliani just needs to make it through the primary and he's a shoo-in for President. Which, of course, is a depressing thought if you value your personal freedoms and demand accountability at the highest levels of government.

But hey, why change now, right?

Regardless how I feel about any one candidate, this religious fervor bullshit needs to stop.

a "shoo in"? please remember we're talking about America here - like Kansas, and Texas and South Dakota - and electing an Italian-American. Or a woman, or a Black man. I'm sorry to say our nation is simply not that evolved.

You didn't read what I wrote: I said that if he wins the primary - the Republican nomination - he'll be a shoo-in because he'll face either Obama or Hilary.

Who do you think Cooter, the gun nut from Bumfuck, Alabama would vote for given those choices?
