Camera in the Kitchen: Tiny's Giant Sandwich Shop

051107_tinys-sign.jpgThe largely unmarked Tiny's Giant Sandwich Shop on the corner of Rivington and Norfolk streets is our favorite cheap sandwich shop for a relaxed, quick sit-down meal in a comfortable environment. It's not as though we had a favorite low-cost sandwicherie before eating at Tiny's; we only made up the category after our first time eating there more than a year ago. Their sandwiches, many of which can be made vegetarian-friendly, come with a side of potato chips and cost $5 or less for a regular size. We have never ventured to find out what the larger size is since the small has always been enough to satiate our belly.

Our favorite is the classic grilled cheese, a gooey combination of melted cheddar, provolone, mozzarella and tomato smooshed between substantial slices of white or 7-grain bread whose every wheaty pore is infused with butter. We added sautéed onions for $1, resulting in a mouthful of soft chopped onion filling in every cheesy bite.

You can also make your own sandwich out of any of their ingredients if the established creations fail to please you. Our friend made her own ham, lettuce and tomato sandwich on a brioche roll.

The only "miss" we've had so far is the crab cake sandwich, which tasted more like a soggy, mashed potato sandwich, something that would've only been okay if we were expecting a soggy mashed potato sandwich. Anything with melted cheese has been good to us so far. If you're as into gooey strands of curdled milk as we are be sure to check out the "Silly Philly Portobello", an awesome combination of sliced portobello mushrooms, sautéed onion and melted provolone.

Tiny's Giant Sandwich Shop is located at 129 Rivington Street (at Norfolk Street). 212-982-1690

Gothamist,

The favorite-cheap-sandwich category is a well-established and accomplished category which Tiny's has reigned (and I hope will continue to).

If it were not for Tiny's, I would probably be a very unhappy man, albeit 10 pounds lighter.

I used to work down the street from Tiny's and am a longstanding fan of the veggie chicken parm sandwich (get extra sauce on the side). You can pick up a cupcake at Sugar Sweet Sunshine across the street if you're really looking to gain weight.

Get yourself a hot And spicy rizzak.

It actually pains me to consider ordering anything else there since i've tried it.

I kind of freaked out when Tiny's moved from its super-tiny location on Rivington down the street. The panic on my face must have been evident b/c a charitable passerby let me know that it had only moved, not closed.

Nick: Thanks! I love sandwiches, so if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Zach: 10 pounds...is a lot of sandwich! ;) I think I'd be better off eating at Tiny's than some other places. If only I lived closer to it...

Dallas: Ahh, I picked up a slice of coconut cream pie after my meal. If I worked near there I'd be so screwed.

Phil: I'll try that next time!

DaveH: Oh god, I would be so sad if it closed. Neverrrr!!

you say cheap? i looked at the menu and it's lik 8 bucks a sandwich. too rich for my blood

Jojo, it is cheap compared to the other restaurants nearby where dinner will run you $25 & up! Also if you are in a hurry, Tiny's service is quick, and you probably won't have to wait on line for a table.

Jojo: It's about $5 a sandwich unless you want a larger one, which I said in my first paragraph you probably wouldn't need...um...

Satiate is a great word, isn't it? Of course, it has never been applied to my belly ;)

That place is for stupid trustfund hipsters and the poseur idiots that follow in their stupid hipster footsteps like so many packs of carrion-eating hyenas. I hate hipsters so much. God I hate them so much. What with their stupid faces and their hipster clothing and stupid hipster purses and such. I can't believe I am the first person to point that out.

they close too early. like at 8:30. that's unheard of in the LES

who else thinks luke lost out in the looks department?

Seriously, this is the first Camera in the Kitchen post where the food actually looks appetizing. Thanks for some decently lit photos -- this place looks great.

luke is totally a hipster.

yeah the vegan buffalo chicken sandwich is quite tasty...though i wish they had more side options other than chips or salad. like a nice slaw. a slaw would be good.

Mmmmm...Delicious Tiny's...the veggie sandwiches are perfection and when I'm feeling carnivorous, the regular sandwiches always hit the spot. Take it from the non-profit types across the road, it rates highly on the lunch spots list and you don't need to be a trustfund baby to appreciate it.

Tiny's is good... sure... but what's up with a sandwich place constantly running out of bread? And the girls that work there are such biatchs. Still... they do make a mean sandwich.... and I do still keep going....

I dont know what you are talking about T-nizzle, I have always found the staff very nice and helpful.
My partner and I meet there at least once every two weeks to split a small southwest chicken sandwich and a tinys happy salad...best lunch in the LES.

Luke,

You're a little behind on this. 'Trust fund hipsters' and 'normal' hipsters alike now mostly populate and congregate in (north/east)williamsburg and greenpoint. LES brings a much more, lets say, common crowd nowadays.

Also- "with their stupid faces". . . what?

user-pic

Color me ignorant, but what exactly comes on the vegan buffalo chicken sandwich?
