Pol Wants to Regulate Strippers

2007_05_stripsilo.jpgNext for T&A: Albany style pork? We have to give Assemblyman Felix Ortiz props for thinking of creative ways to increase revenue, even if it's hilarious. The Post reports that the Brooklyn politician is proposing that strippers need to be licensed and have permits, or else they'll be fined as will any establishment that employees unlicensed strippers. The Post has details:

In his bill sponsor memo, Ortiz said his proposal is meant to protect human-trafficking victims, many of whom "are often found in the streets or working in establishments that offer commercial sex acts, such as strip clubs and pornography production companies.

"The purpose of this act is to ensure that dance performers are age appropriate, legally documented and not victims of severe forms of trafficking," the memo said.

Ortiz said he also wants to make sure strippers pay taxes on their lap-dance cash, and says that while the bill won't require strippers to get medical checkups, it might help protect them and their customers from sexually transmitted disease.

It's unclear how much the permits would cost, but Ortiz did propose fines: First-time violations of "stripping without a permit" - $20 fine; second offense - $50. Strip club owners would be fined $1,000 the first time if found employing unlicensed trippers, and up to $2,000 for subsequent violations.

The Post went to exotic club FlashDancers for reactions: One said, "This is a freelance job. How are they going to make money off of us like that?" While another said, "It ain't going to happen." We wonder how many strip club industry lobbyists are out there - think of it, strippers going to Albany to protest the bill!

I mean, stripclubs in New York are already pretty much a joke. I guess we might as well put another nail in the post guiliani coffin.

"First-time violations of "stripping without a permit" - $20 fine"

that's hilarious

Whats next? Grinding a man's hard on: community service?

Another Note:

FlashDancers = Best Strip Club in the city. Period.

hey the state's gotta pay for all that stuff it buys somehow, right?

how else is spitzer going to take us to the promised land, where everything not forbidden is compulsory and everything not compulsory is forbidden? it wouldn't be so bad if they extended this twisted post-socialist logic of the state being up in everyone's last inch of beeswax to things like drugs or prostitution, which would at least help remove the criminal element from otherwise victimless crimes.

but yeah, not going to happen.

Tim N,

What does your psychiatrist think about you obsession with Rudy Giuliani? Oh who am I kidding? Your shrink stopped listening to your rants years ago. He probably does Sudoku puzzles while you babble on and on.

rudy can suck my left nut while he's trying to do sudoku puzzles. I hope he's licensed.

anyway, how regulating all the money laundering that goes on in the clubs or the fraudulent expense reports submitted for said establishment.

This idiot must be a Democrat. Rather than raise taxes on Wall Street guys making eight figures he's looking to plug the budget one lapdance $20 bill at a time. Same group that constantly whines about income inequality and is proposing to tax people's eBay sales. No wonder it took six years and a war in Iraq for Democrats to win anything.

need a third party, your point is pretty stupid. You act as if Republicans actually want to tax those Wall Streeters, too. Mindboggling.

On a more serious note,
if you can resist the urge to think of this as a ploy for the state to earn money (seriously, with $20 fines how much money would they really make?) I think it is fairly obvious that this is a measure intended to protect the women who work at these places.
It's harder to exploit people when the government knows that they are working for you and how much you're paying them.

I don't see what the big deal is with this - other states have been licensing dancers for years.

need a third party, your point is pretty stupid. You act as if Republicans actually want to tax those Wall Streeters, too. Mindboggling.

Actually, your point is the stupid one. By what logic do you interpret an attack on a Democrat as an endorsement of Republicans? Ever consider that the best course of action is somewhere in the middle - hence Third Party.

Republicans want to cut taxes on the rich and Democrats think anyone making low six figures should be put in the same tax bracket as CEOs.

Loser...

Who's the one with the obsession, internet tough guy?

Maybe it's your first line. Maybe it's your entire comment. Maybe you think a third party will actually win in the States. Maybe you actually think a third-party candidate wouldn't tax people, too. Hmm. Maybe it's just you. Cheers.

Protect the dancers from being exploited? Being a stripper or erotic dancer is the epitome of honest exploitation. It ain't much different than the ingratiating gyrations that many guys go through to impress management at a corporate presentation. They just get paid more to do it. Higher paid whores so to speak. At least the gals can leave work and have a life. I wonder what they would have to say about this "protection".

Who's the one with the obsession, internet tough guy?

You are. I don't care if you like Giuliani or not but you don't even make coherent arguments about Giuliani or his positions. You're obsessed with making a disparaging comments the minute his name comes up. We already know you don't like him. Make a point or stop posting about it.

Elderta, a third party candidate doesn't have to win to make a difference. Bill Clinton would never have been elected without Ross Perot.

I'd like to know your logic on how you label me as anti-tax. As I said I am all for taxes on the actual rich people. Considering the Democrats campaigned for the last three election cycles on blasting Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy you would think that they would have made some progress on that in the last three months. Sorry if it offends you that I want to hold them accountable.

Anyway, I think it's pretty sad that you defend Democrats when they screw up or don't do anything. I'm an independent maybe I have better persepctive than you do. You seem to be taking the position that if the GOP sucks than all the Democrats have to do is slightly surpass sucking. Sorry if that doesn't excite me. Of course, you'll probably come back with some sort of put down. Save your breath.

That's funny, It astounds me the length for which our elected politicians will go to distance themselves from the real issues . Regulating Strippers/Strip clubs is probably one of the dumbest idea's I've heard in a while ! How would it be enforced ? What's to stop the clubs from doing what they already do by operating illegally ? This is a multi-billion dollar operation and you think there just going to let the city charge them for performing without a fight !

Al sharpton is commenting on this post?
we will never elect a dago giunea wop with a lisp for president.

I voted for Nader. Happy now?

Please don't play the "oh pitiful is me Independent" card. You throw out hyperbolic statements like you did attacking one party only (except for that "third party" signature) and don't expect to be called on it? Interesting.

I didn't call you anti-tax. I didn't mention anything about you being anti-tax. What I said was is that you seem to think that third-party candidates would A) actually succeed in America and 2) not tax people. Reading into that as "anti-tax" is a mistake. I agree with you that Perot helped Clinton just as Nader helped Bush. Anyway, this really has nothing to do with the topic at hand, so, as I said before, Cheers.

Those are some very pointy nipples in that picture.

I'm just saying.

"Those are some very pointy nipples in that picture."

Shes either depicting a very horny stripper, or its very cold where shes standing. I can't exactly put my finger on it.

you're not allowed to put your finger on it.
the bouncer will toss you.

Tim N., Since you now have a Stalker, does that mean you've hit the big time??
