Mets 5, Giants 3: John Maine was on the hook for his first loss of the season, but late-inning heroics by the Mets bailed him out. While he only allowed 3 runs over 6 innings, San Francisco's Matt Morris was better, allowing only 2 runs over 7. Carlos Delgado hit a home run, only his 2nd of the season, in the 4th inning into McCovey Cove. Delgado also drove in the game-tying run with a double in the 8th inning against the shift in the Giants' outfield, scoring Carlos Beltran from first.
In the 9th inning, with former Mets closer Armando Benitez on the mound, David Wright stepped to the plate with bases loaded and one out. Any long-time Mets fan knows what comes next. Not because of what Wright can do, but of the torture that Benitez put fans through while he was with the Mets. Wright hit a two-run double, giving the Mets the go ahead runs. Oh Armando, how we missed you so.
The Mets were 5-2 on their trip west and return home for a 10-game homestand. First up the Brewers (the NL's best team!), then the Cubs, and then the Yankees come to Flushing. And there's some bad-looking team-bonding going on in the Mets clubhouse.
- Yankees 6, Rangers 2: Don't look now, but the Yankees are moving up in the standings. Not so long ago, they were mired in last place, now they're back up to .500. While it's still very early, they're 6 back of the hated Red Sox. In his 2nd start off the DL, Mike Mussina allowed only 2 runs and 3 hits in six innings.
