Hipster Dissection

2007_05_arts_hipster.jpgWho better to dissect the hipster than a bartender at favorite hipster hangouts? NY Mag asks bartender at Enid's and The Annex, Lynnea Scalora, some questions about the regulars.

Is there a difference between the LES hipster and the Greenpoint hipster?

In Greenpoint, it’s relaxed hipsters. They’re cool but messy. Whereas in the LES everyone is cool and dolled up. At the Annex people are very concerned about their image, who they’re seen with, getting wasted, and acting like assholes.

Scalora herself, who in the articles photo is wearing an 80s-inspired shirt and leaning against a pinball machine, seems to fit somewhere in between her description. However she's in a band (White Hills) and is a performance artist, which (on paper) would bring her up to ultimate hipster status! But then we find out that the Polish locals at Enid's get kicked out when they try to converse with the "cool but messy" hipsters ("There’s a few Polish guys that come in really wasted and we have to kick them out. They’ll start talking to the customers and being super-drunk."), and the softball team gets to stay ("They’d get really loud and it would scare everyone away so no one would come for dinner. One night they won the championships and one of the guys on the team threw a beer on me.")! Hipsters are supposed to like quirky locals, not jocks...leaving this study in hipdsterdom inconclusive.

Thanks for idetifying yourself very squarely as what Umberto Eco identifies as an Ur-Fascist, mr. "better read" square.

I wear a blue shirt, but geuss what? I am better read that any d-bag with a scarf and ironic t-shirt. In the past, educated people would make money to support themselves and also pursue artistic interests. Now, hipsters put the artistic pursuits up front and have their parents fund their coke-fueled lifestyles. They tend to lack perspective and never surprise me. Hipsters are a symptom of this country's permanant adolescence.

I feel bad for them. After never being forced into adulthood, old age is going to hit like a sledgehammer.

there is nothing unique about hipsters. they pretty much copy each other. it's just another form of conformity.

...oh the desperate loneliness and backlash of the square community...

Look, it's all about the individual. Anyone who, regardless of the image he or she portrays, assumes an elitist attitude and discriminates against those who don't (or, often DO) listen to their preferred music, dress in their chosen style, etc. is an asshole. While the basic definition of "hipster" may include some reference to style, I think the general stereotype has more to do with attitude. Basically, a "hipster" is a someone a critic is likely to have much in common with, but who has an attitude of entitlement. The "hipster" is the person who offends by disregarding history, standards and protocol. He assumes acceptance based on class; he has no concept of "earning" respect.

All hipster scum should be rounded up and deported to northern Canada so they can be ironic with their frozen-ass selves somewhere else!!

  • Whut

Thank God the Enid's staff is there to keep the local drunk Polish away from me while I'm drunk. It's like, can't you get your own neighborhood?

#16 (virgil) has got it. Hipster-basher bashing is the new hipster-bashing.

  • virgil

I think you guys (#s 12, 13, 14) are missing the point a bit. People don't get annoyed at hipsters for being different; they get annoyed at how similar they are to each other, while trying too hard to convince themselves and others that they're original.

It's the polar opposite of the nerds in high school. Nerds are thought of as nerds because they absolutely can not fit in. That's why some of us, in time, learn to look back and respect them, for being themselves in the face of widespread scorn. Hipster get affirmation every time they tur on the TV, surf the internet, or walk down the street in W'burg or the LES.

Now get off my lawn, all of you.

  • OMG Shoes

We need MORE hipsters in this town. I'm so sick of the sea of baby-blue oxford shirts, gelled spiky hair and pleated khaki pants...and the tacky interchangeable generichics that love them. Forget going to the First Friday parties at the Gugg for an interesting arty mix--the crowd is nauseatingly square. NYC is becoming BORING!

  • KhakiMinds

#13 Joe nailed it on the head. The predictable and venomous hipster-bashing says a lot about how utterly uninteresting and secretly envious those bashers are.

  • Joe

#12- very well put. I couldn't agree more. It has become acceptable to make fun of people who are different than you if you refer to them as a "hipster". Anyone who makes fun of "hipsters" with stupid stereotype-based comments is most likely an insecure, boring conformist who hates their 9-5 and is jealous that some people have chosen more interesting paths in life.

  • LOOK IN THE MIRROR

"Hipster bashing" is reminiscent of the "making fun of nerds" behavior in high school, where the popular students (jocks and cheerleaders) made fun of the offbeat (artistic, punk, introverted) students based on their supposedly superficial, "too cool for school" fashion and culture.

Now many of the same former "offbeat students" are enjoying the feeling of superiority by putting down others based on their fashion or culture.

It's exactly the same thing. You have become what you hated. YOU ARE ONE OF THEM.

Shame on you. School is over.

    Enid's softball rules!

Hipsters Shmipsters. Todays counter-culture becomes tomorrow's over-the-counter-culture. That's the shit we've been in since hipness was revived in the snuff film of consumerism. Now "life-style" stalks us like Frankenstein, and we are all in on it. There aint't been no "hip" for a very long time. That said, one thing that hasn't changed is the sarcasm of squares.

  • angry at life!

hipsters are definitely the new white people -- in other words, an ambiguous group that has ascended to some vague status where apparently it's alright to stereotype, criticize and generally hate them. ps i hate bloggersrapclassicalsouth... oh, and iran. it's amazing which hot-buttons bring the general intolerance in our great progressive city... ps-dontbeatmeupafterclass!

  • matukonyc

I never set foot in Enid's on principle. It's the worst of the worst.

  • matty

I'm with chuck. hipsters are dead. anyone who's left are either just cool people w/ fashion sense or art students (barf) or kids mimicing their older siblings.

  • Chuck

Can we go one freaking day with out reading about hipsters or seeing the word hipster? OMFG its over.

  • .

She (or one of the authors) left out the fact that Enid's bartenders are very good about 86ing any obnoxious drunks (Polish or otherwise) hitting on girls. No reason to get your panties in a bunch thinking they discriminate against locals or anything.

More places ought to enforce this policy.

  • r kelly

    is K Fed a hipster?

I suddenly have this urge to play hacky sack

Hipsters are cute, but the smart hipster would be going to the gym right now, realizing the pendulum will be swinging around. By the time they're perfectly in shape, they'll have a headstart on all the other sheep.

  • bim

please delete this article. it's so nerdy. hipsters are annoying to the point that we needn't acknowledge them.
