Car Hits Millionaire/Worst Landlord in Hell's Kitchen

2007_05_rollsroyce.jpgOn the Gothamist Newsmap, one of the incidents is "Pedestrian Struck | West 51 Btw 9th & 10th Ave I/f/o Club Posh Manhattan, NY | 5/9/2007 2:14 a.m." It turns out that the pedestrian isn't any ol' pedestrian -- it happens to be Steve Green, millionaire real-estate developer, onetime member of the "worst landlords of the city" club, and high-profile gay divorcee.

Green was leaving Club Posh, walking to his Rolls-Royce, when he was struck by a Ford Crown Victoria at 9th Avenue and 51st Street. Green is at St. Vincent's, and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "He's in very serious condition" (though doctors say his prognosis is good).

The multi-millionaire, allegedly worth $77 million, was sentenced to 8 years in federal prison for "failing to pay taxes and using a phony Social Security number on a multimillion-dollar loan. NY1 says that Green was scheduled to report to prison at the end of this month, but now that he's hurt, it's unclear whether that date changes. And given his history, you have to wonder if it was a hit-and-run or a planned attack.

Green still owes the city over $2 million, but managed to throw himself a big pre-sentencing party. And his tendency to draw up contracts created an interesting ruling about contracts and gay marriage legality when his boyfriend sued him.

I WORK FOR A VENDOR THAT STEVE GREEN HIRED. WE ARE STILL TRYING TO GET PAID. HE IS ONE OF THE MOST INCONSIDERATE PEOPLE I HAVE EVER HAD TO DEAL WITH AND WHEN YOU ARE IN THE APT BUSINESS YOU DEAL WITH SOME PRETTY BAD PEOPLE, BUT NOTHING LIKE HIM. HE HAS SCREWED SO MANY PEOPLE IN TAMPA FL AND NOW TENN AND NY. HOW THIS MAN GOT ANY TIME TO GET PREPARED FOR PRISION IS BEYOND ME. WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH US NOT GETTING PAID BUT HE GETS TO GO OUT CLUBING AND SO ON. THOSE RESIDENTS THAT LIVED AT AMBERTON APTS. IN TAMPA,FL DIDNT EVEN HAVE A CHANCE TO FIND A PLACE TO LIVE THEY CAME HOME FROM WORK AND CODE INFORCEMENT PUT THEM OUT OF THEIR HOMES BECAUSE OF HOW THIS MAN DIDNT TAKE CARE OF ANY OF THE PROBLEMS HE WAS SUPPOSE TO TAKE CARE OF. HE HAS AN ALCOHOL PROBLEM AND A JUDGE AND HIS ATTORNEY ASKED HE GET TREATED FOR ALCOHOLISM BUT HE WAS LEAVING A NIGHT CLUB. IT IS SAD THAT HE WAS HIT BY A CAR BUT ACCORDING TO HIS ATTORNEY HE IS FINE SO NOW LET JUSTICE BE SERVED.

He's a nice guy?? Is generous?? Maybe you should ask some of his residents how generous he is. Residents here in tenn. at Ft. Campbell. Soilders who come back from war and have to deal with him not fixing anything. He hasn't paid vendors. To me if someone works for you and you don't pay them, then your stealing from them. Vendors are mostily self-empolyed people raising children. To take food from children is not nice or generous.

Stop making sense, TJ. There's no room for rationality on a message board.

Very impressed that even with the man lieing in the coma the NYC media can still manage to quip and make snide remarks a bout this guy. While i'll agree that he's done some questionable things, find me one business man who hasn't he just had the bad luck to be cought. As someone who knows him personally he's done so much good, for people, and shock of the ages is actually a generous guy. I don't know how the prognosous for a man lieing in a coma is good btw.

"Green still owes the city over $2 million, but managed to throw himself a big pre-sentencing party."

Maybe he managed to do it with the other $75 million he has.

Thanks, much appreciated. I thought that their first names were of different spellings, just wanted to make sure.

What the hell is Club Posh??

I am pretty sure that Steven Green (mentioned in this post) and Stephen Green (brother of Mark) are different people. Steven Green, who has had apartments in NYC, also has had dealings with real estate in Florida and Tennessee. Stephen L. Green (of SL Green) deals more with commercial real estate.

Plus, I suspect Mark Green would have released a statement if his brother were hit by a car.

    Info on Stephen L. Green:

  • Rob Byrnes

Stephen L. Green runs SL Green Realty. The hit-and-run victim is Steven S. Green. There doesn't appear to be any relation.

timbnyc, I was thinking the same thing. anybody know?

  • G. Jetson

Isn't this the namesake of SL Green, the company that owns a number of office buildings around town?

  • Reality Czech:

Well, there's some poor livery guy who's got to deal with a hell of a dent this morning, that can put a crimp in your day.

  • timbnyc

    Isn't that Mark Green's brother?

  • Reality Czech

    Is there anything tragic here?

    I think not.

Is there anything tragic about this story?

    I don't think so.
