Waiter Says Mr. Chow Treated Him As "Whipping Boy"

2007_05_mrchow.jpgThere's a new group of servers accusing a restaurant of paying sub-minimum wages - former employees of the two upscale Mr. Chow locations. One of the servers also accuses restaurateur Michael Chow of kicking him in the stomach! The three filed a lawsuit yesterday in Manhattan Federal Court.

Costin Dumitrescu, who had worked at Mr. Chow for 11 years, says that when he arrived to a meeting late, he was forced to lie down on the floor. The lawsuit states:

"Michael Chow periodically walked up to Dumitrescu as he lay on the floor, and pretended to kick Dumitrescu in order to make Dumitrescu flinch in fear. On a few occasions, Michael Chow actually kicked Dumitrescu while he was lying on the ground, albeit not with full force."
Other alleged "abusive management techniques" per WNBC: "tapping or 'lightly' slapping a waiter's chin or back of the head to get his attention, scribbling with a pen on the formal uniforms of staffers, ordering Dumitrescu to sweep cigarette butts from city streets outside the Tribeca restaurant and repeatedly yelling 'Are you with me?' at his waiters." Hmm, the sweeping and yelling don't sound particularly abusive, but the pen scribbling is bad, considering that the suit also alleges that the servers had to buy their own $350 jackets.

The servers are looking for $5 million in damages. Other fights between servers and management: Saigon Grill and Ollie's workers claim that they are paid sub-minimum wages and have been picketing outside locations, and Telepan servers say that managers are taking their tips.

Those Saigon Grill and Ollie's workers sure know how to protest! Past one of their protests on University a few times those guys have it down to a science, loud, signs, colorful, big crowd!

# 4, wow, you are sooooo fkkng hilarious! Seriously, you should do comedy. OMG, Asians=dog eaters, totally! Comic gold! And of course, every mention of any Asian, no matter who, must include a reference to Virginia Tech. You can pat yourself on the back and just go home for the day. You've done such a fantastic job of commenting. Kudos!

This is no worse than any of the other chink-run restaurants in the city. In fact, you don't hear about the abuse going on at the other establishments, because half of the workers are wetbacks who can't complain because they a) can't speak english, and b) don't want to get sent back to their shithole country.

Stop complaining you worthless turds and suck it up!

The restaurant business sucks, period. I did it for many years during college, but finally decided to just get out forever. You can make a lot more maney than other young people can, if you work in a good restaurant in the city, but you pay for it dearly with your quality of life

#4 and #6

hope you get some food poisoning from a white establishment.

Nothing personal but if you just look closely at Mr Chow appearance: He is not an handsome or attractive guy ( problably with lots of inferior complex and always the last pick amongst the women). Also, it's not the Chinese tradition to be nice to others- it show that you are weak. i sure like to know what shoe size he wears-probably size 6? Little dick syndrome!

why doe mr. chow look exactly like Mickey Rooney's Japanese Landlord caricature in Breakfast at TIffany's? surely the man must have seen the movie.

#10 wins most observant post of the day. dead on. dead f**king on.

These 'workers' should be happy to have any job, and if they don't like it, tough crap. Let the market sort out what is an acceptable minimum wage, and get the government off of the back of these glorious restaraunt entrepreneurs.
